Willie Mcginest

“Hello? Miiiiike…What’s goin’ on? I know, I know! Long time no speak, man. How you doin’?

“Yeah, I heard. Retired. I didn’t see that coming. But good for you.

Days before he was honored at halftime of the Patriots-Jets game, former linebacker Tedy Bruschi said during an interview that he does not want his number 54 retired. Instead he hopes other players wear his number and remember the significance of that 54.

On the day that celebrates goblins, ghouls, and vampires, there will be countless references to monsters as the Patriots welcome the Minnesota Vikings to Gillette Stadium.

We’ll hear about WR Randy Moss coming back to Foxborough to haunt the team that traded him over three weeks ago. Or the quarterback that just keeps coming back from the dead like Jason Voorhees. Brett Favre made his third comeback before the season despite not being fully healed from ankle surgery. Favre slowly limped off the field last week, looking like a zombie with two fractures in his foot. But everyone expects Favre to emerge from the grave (or cold tub) and be under center Sunday afternoon.

I’m not much of a poker player, but since the beginning of training camp, head coach Bill Belichick has been exchanging cards, looking for a full house.

They looked at QB Cleo Lemon. DE Kevin Carter seems to be getting serious consideration. QB Matt Gutierrez was cut and QB Andrew Walter signed to replace Gutz.

Remember how Willie McGinest was irked when Junior Seau signed with the Patriots and was allowed to wear “55” right after Willie left for Cleveland? Well it sounds like McGinest wants to erase the years the fraud wore his number.

Paging through the Sunday edition of the Boston Herald, there’s a small story about quarterback-turned-receiver/runningback Julian Edelman, when I noticed something about him.

Like a lot of receivers today, he’s wearing a low number. But he’s not wearing just any low number. I wasn’t sure looking at the jersey because Edelman had the ball tucked over the second number. But on the shorts, I was able to confirm my hunch: he had “11.”

This goes back to when I was hoping the Patriots would draft at least two linebackers in April. I was so relieved they came away with three and added two more as rookie free agents. But  Bo Ruud doesn't make the active roster. Then Shawn Crable goes on IR. Next up was Adalius Thomas apparently breaking his arm. Pierre Woods takes his place. The word is Woods broke his jaw tackling Pittsburgh's tight end on Sunday.

I remember during his San Diego days, fans held up signs that played on Junior Seau's last name as an expression of how offensive players felt when Junior hit them. The signs read, "Say-OW!"

Currently at patriots.com, fans can vote for the newest member of the upcoming Patriots Hall of Fame between tight end Ben Coates, running back Jim Nance, and center Jon Morris. In a few years time, linebacker Willie McGinest could be debated for the honor.

Going into the 2003 NFL Draft, I was a fan of University of Michigan linebacker Victor Hobson. The man was a tackling machine for the Wolverines and one of their best defenders since corner back Charles Woodson.
