Ty Warren

25 October 2011

endar has been S Brandon Meriweather, S Brandon McGowan, RB Laurence Maroney, WR Randy Moss, and DE Ty Warren. Moral of the story: Trust souvenir calanders to track the days, not the roster.

There are always surprises after teams complete roster cuts following training camp. It was no different for New England, but the general opinion was some of the players cut would sign with other teams.

Injuries affected depth (DL Ty Warren and CB Leigh Bodden were on IR for the season; RB Kevin Faulk missed most of the year). New England would had been a better team.

But the Pats won’t be the exact same team next year. Faulk and DL Gerard Warren are two of 17 free agents and their return isn’t guaranteed. That’s not necessarily a negative. There’s room for improvement that experience might not take care of. Free agency can shore up a weakness quickly. And if New England continues their success in NFL Draft, some rookies will play from day one.

e for the youngest defense in the league, especially since they’ve played without veterans DL Ty Warren and CB Leigh Bodden all season long.

Bodden was expected to be the best corner on the team. In his absence, rookie Devin McCourty stepped up and leads the team with six interceptions. McCourty is in the conversation for Rookie of the Year.

fective.

But as a group, with NT Peter Soliai anchoring the middle, they are like Seymour, Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork. Langford, Soliai, and Odrick were all drafted by Miami, all are young, and the Dolphins want to keep the core of their defense together for a long time.

They will miss DE Ty Warren, who is on injured reserve with a torn labrum in his hip.

The first unit looked like they missed Warren in the preseason. They gave up at least 50 yards on the ground by halftime in the first three games. And when they traveled to New Meadowlands Stadium, the New York Giants gained 41 yards on just five carries when the first teams were on the field for the first two series.

A few things I’m looking for in the preseason finale:

Red Cross – DE Ty Warren, OL Nick Kaczur, and now Bodden, could miss the entire season. Just come out of this game healthy.

This could be the first sign of how much the defense will miss DE Ty Warren

3. I’m also not high on the defense’s inability to apply pressure. After two games the Pats have two sacks. The only way they’re making quarterbacks nervous is by blitzing. Most defenses can’t survive by living by the blitz. Thankfully the secondary has been solid so far.

is there an abundance of veterans with mainstays Vince Wilfork (28 years old), Mike Wright (28) and Ty Warren (29) welcoming Damione Lewis (32) and Gerard Warren (32). There are plenty of youthful hopefuls, but they aren’t guaranteed snaps, with Myron Pryor a likely exception after an encouraging rookie year.

Remember the DL was stacked with first rounders Richard Seymour, Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork for a while, with second round pick Jarvis Green the first D-lineman off the bench as part of the rotation. And the Pats selected Daniel Graham and Ben Watson with late first round picks.

s’ need, with 1 not a need and 5 being ugent:

Defensive Line

Vince Wilfork, Mike Wright, Ty Warren, Ron Brace, Myron Pryor, Darryl Richard, Adrian Grady, Damione Lewis

Need: 4

Wilfork will anchor the line, playing the nose or end. With the security of a new contract, he will remain with the Patriots for the next five years. Wright likely becomes the starter after Jarvis Green left for Denver. Warren remains solid, though unspectacular.

3 January 2010

There are a dozen players on this week’s injury report. Fortunately only DLs Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork are questionable for the season finale.

Assuming head coach Bill Belichick plays it safe, Warren and Wilfork will be held out of the season finale against Houston. After that, it’s a case by case basis.

Congratulations to NT Ron Brace. He had his first career start. Without NT Vince Wilfork, DEs Ty Warren and Myron Pryor out, he was needed. Brace was OK, finishing with four total tackles.

15 November 2009

It was a short rotation on the D-line as they played without Jarvis Green and Ty Warren. By the fourth quarter the defense was tired as the pressure all but disappeared, leaving the secondary to Manning’s mercy. Losing OLB Tully Banta-Cain early hurt as well.

a 17-7 second quarter lead before the Pats battled back to tie the game, and ultimately won with a Ty Warren safety of Bills QB J.P. Losman.

If history repeats itself, then New England is on its way to a 12-4 record and a playoff run to the AFC Championship. Part of that win total was a 24-17 week two win over the Jets.

The only long-tenured players are linemen Jarvis Green, Ty Warren, Vince Wilfork, and Mike Wright and safety James Sanders.

Other veterans on the defense were signed as free agents, many signed just this year. While adjusting to a new defense might be easier for them, don’t expect the unit to play as a whole immediately. There will be blown assignments because of mental lapses and lack of trust.

d off, the Patriots placed five players on the physically unable to perform list, PUP for short: DE Ty Warren, OLB Shawn Crable, OT Mark LeVoir, and rookies OG Rich Ohrnberger and DT Darryl Richard. Joining them on the sideline is rookie receiver Brandon Tate on the active/non-football injury list.

knowledge of the Patriots D-line rotation starts with Richard Seymour, ends with Jarvis Green, with Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork in between. But Wright worked his way up from 2005 practice squad signee to playing in every game in 2008. He may not be indispensible, but Wright's contribution to the team is valuable.

LBs Tedy Bruschi and Pierre Woods are out. S James Sanders is doubtful. And DE Ty Warren is 50-50. Last week New England had their problems trying to control Seatle's 19th-ranked ground game. How will they fare against a run-first offense?

s quality of play, Seymour has been one of the healthiest lineman along the Patriots D-line.

Both Ty Warren and Jarvis Green missed games this year. Green, the designated rush end in pass situations, has zero sacks. Warren has a pair, but it doesn't come close to Seymour's team leading eight sacks. That's almost unheard of from a 3-4 lineman!

27 October 2008

ouldn't be surprised that LB Adalius Thomas had his best game Sunday (two sacks) and fellow linemen Ty Warren and Mike Wright tallied a sack each in the last two games.

When I predicted the defense would be better this year, the thinking started with a healthy D-line. Seymour says he's healthy for the first time in two years and it's showing now. Whether it was a bad arm or a troublesome knee that held Seymour back in the past, he wasn't the same.

But the pass rush comes up short. He only has one sack. NT Vince Wilfork, DEs Ty Warren, Jarvis Green, and Mike Wright haven't tallied one.

Granted, in a 3-4 defense, the OLBs shoulder most of the responsibility of baggin' passers. I knew Mike Vrabel had a career year that wouldn't be repeated. He averaged just over five sacks per season with the Pats. Through four games he has two sacks, which projects to eight sacks for the year.

29 July 2008

He anchors a line that will have a healthy Richard Seymour to start the season and Ty Warren, who I expect to produce like his 2006 season (84 tackles, 7.5 sacks). Rotate in Jarvis Green and  Mike Wright for pass rush purposes and New England has one of the best and deepest defensive lines in the league.
