Ty Law

1 December 2008

At this point, where would the Pats turn for help? Even Ty Law's corpse has been signed at this point.

I never thought I'd miss Otis Smith this much.

So I've resigned myself to the notion that the secondary will struggle. That much I'm willing to live with, at least until the off-season. But the dancing's gotta stop. How about a no-dancing rule is enacted until you've completed a checklist of accomplishments, a docket that could include such hard-to-fathom acts as 1)covering your man effectively on five consecutive plays; 2) making a key play, at any point, in any game; or 3) intercepting a pass that wasn't overthrown by 15 yards. Do any one of those things, get a 15-second dance.

Ty Law doesn't scare me.

The 5-time former Pro Bowl corner is 34 years old and hasn't played a game since the end of the 2007 season with Kansas City. That season Law came away with two interceptions, 13 passes defensed, and declining play. If he was still good, K.C. would had kept him over Patrick Surtain.

Do they call CB Ty Law or S John Lynch? Should they shift James Sanders to strong safety or promote Brandon Merriweather? Or maybe they turn a corner into a safety, like Mike Richardson? It worked well for a while with Eugene Wilson.

course S Rodney Harrison was an unquestionable success, as was CB Tyrone Poole when he was opposite Ty Law. When Belichick hit on a free agent, it was a huge benefit to the team.

But signings like the ones above were huge risks. Keep in mind Harrison was considered finished by San Diego when Belichick picked Rodney out of the trash. It was the same story with Poole, who had his best season his first year with the Patriots after bouncing around from Carolina, to Indianapolis, then Denver for a year before his three year stint in New England. 21 passes defensed with six interceptions are Pro Bowl-caliber numbers, and that's what Poole did with the Pats in 2003.

Hell, they're allegedly still talking to CB Ty Law about a possible return. Why not Colvin too?

Eh...I think I've had enough of these "for old times sake" players. I'd only welcome back Seau. Law lost a step so no to him playing corner (although Law as a free safety does appeal to me). I don't even want Lynch for goodness sake!

The Pats haven't given up on Mike Richardson either. Maybe Ty Law is on head coach Bill Belichick's speed dial.

But Hobbs can't concern himself with the players behind him. He has to step up his game and be what the Patriots need: a top flight corner.

he Patriots signed the former Arizona Cardinals corner as a veteran presence after the departure of Ty Law. The Pats tolerated just six starts by Starks before they tired of Duane's generosity. He finished with just five passes defensed and maybe twice as many touchdowns allowed (I think Starks gave up more than that).
