He made a few last night. As for CB Terrence Wheatley, again he took bad angles tackling and victimized in pass coverage. He gave up the TD pass to Chris Henry.

Reserve quarterbacks – With the exception of the 2-minute drive to end the game, Kevin O’Connell stared down his targets and couldn’t consistently move the team. Rookie free agent Brian Hoyer did a respectable job for someone not good enough to get drafted.

The return of CB Terrence Wheatley from a season-ending wrist injury also makes the battle in the secondary interesting.

This is a secondary that ranked 31st in the league last year with 27 touchdown passes allowed and just 15 interceptions. It’s a problem that goes back to 2007. People were mesmerized by the Brady-to-Moss air show but practically ignored Philadelphia’s 28 points, Baltimore’s 24 (with an offense led by Kyle Boller), or the New York Giants’ season-ending 35.

They need a rush linebacker capable of 10 sacks a year, cornerback help if last year's draft picks Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite don't improve dramatically and stay healthy, and the defensive line must play a full season like they did down the stretch in '08.

Due to recent roster shuffling after placing CB Terrence Wheatley on injured reserve and promoting TE Tyson DeVree from the practice squad to the active roster, the open practice squad slot was filled by Darrell Robertson. He played defensive end for Georgia Tech and will have to change to a 3-4 linebacker.

depth to keep throwing at Bills DT Marcus Stroud all afternoon to tire him would be valuable.

CB Terrence Wheatley, Lewis Sanders -They're not household names, but depth in the defensive backfield is an issue. The Patriots were interested in DeAngelo Hall for a reason. It's possible that Ellis Hobbs won't play as well, meaning a secondary already stretched thin is extended a little more. Will this the point where the secondary finally snaps?

You know, it's a good thing that the Patriots will have the Brigham and Women's/Mass General Health Care Center on the grounds of Patriot Place in 2009. If the '09 season is like this year, then the Pats will have a lot of their players as patients.

h chart the coaches will go, but this will be a baptism by fire for rookie CBs Jonathan Wilhite and Terrence Wheatley. They couldn't of imagined a tougher assignment.

WRs Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, and Anthony Gonzalez aren't the biggest or the fastest, but are very quick with great hands. But what makes them special is the chemistry they built with Manning. They know what each other are thinking and their timing is impeccable. Manning isn't having his typical season and Harrison is slowing down, but they are a better combination than 95 percent of of the QB-WR combos in the league.

Can We Play? - Rookies LB Jerod Mayo and CBs Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite I expect to play a lot. Mayo will start inside with LB Tedy Bruschi. Wheatley might start, but more likely he and Wilhite will play nickel and dime roles. But when the Patriots are up by 30 or more in the fourth, I want to see the other rookies. Keep your helmets close by Crable, O'Connell, Slater, and Guyton.

ree quarters and building a lead KC has no chance to recover from, send in CBs Jonathan Wilhite and Terrence Wheatley in place of Ellis Hobbs and Deltha O'Neal. Give LB Tedy Bruschi's old bones some rest as Gary Guyton bumps helmets with RB Larry Johnson. And while you're at it, LB Shawn Crable could try some new pass rush moves as Mike Vrabel and Adalius Thomas give him veteran insight from the sideline. Skip Cassel and play Kevin O'Connell, use Matt Slater on both sides of the ball and as a returner. Empty the bench.

It will be up to Ellis to make plays.

If Hobbs fails, New England has options. Two rookies, Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite, are green, but could develop quickly if thrown into the fire. And free agents Fernando Bryant and Lewis Sanders are crafty veterans that lack elite credentials, but can get the job done. The Pats haven't given up on Mike Richardson either. Maybe Ty Law is on head coach Bill Belichick's speed dial.

ree or less years under their belt.

With that understanding, CB Jason Webster was sent packing so Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite can get their shot. But at the same time, talent trumps potential. That's why RB/FB Kyle Eckel's days with the Pats are over. You don't keep a fringe player over a former 1,000-yard runner with soft hands.

able in the fourth quarter when he got a sack and batted a pass.

Cornerbacks: Fernando Bryant and Terrence Wheatley did nothing to distinguish themselves. Bryant was particularly disappointing. The good news is he didn't get beat deep, but he frequently allowed completions in front of him. But the biggest disappointment is safety Tank Williams being placed on injured reserve for the year. I was expecting big things from him this year and beyond. I'm sure the Patriots were thinking the same way. This injury would benefit a player on the bubble. It gives someone like Lewis Sanders (two passes defensed) a better chance of making the team.

Those positions will be up for grabs between Wilhite, second round pick Terrence Wheatley, second year Mike Richardson, and free agents Fernando Bryant, Jason Webster, and Lewis Sanders.

Is it really as simple as plugging in the holes? It's very possible that Ellis Hobbs gets switched over from RCB to LCB. The left corner typically covers the opponent's primary receiver, the toughest assignment. I can't imagine that head coach Bill Belichick would start a rookie right out of training camp on the most dangerous receiver.

A reserve defensive back can be easily replaced. New England drafted two corners (Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite) with return ability as well as a receiver (Matt Slater) who has experience playing safety in college. There are also the three free agent corners signed and safety Tank Williams added to the roster. New England will be fine without Andrews.

hat they would draft Asante Samuel's replacement, did they think he should look like Samuel too?

Terrence Wheatley has about the same build as the free agent corner that signed with Philadelphia. You know, 5-9, 178 pounds, like the average Patriots corner. But what's funny is Wheatley has a mop of dreads too! Will Belichick teach Wheatley to act like Samuel too? Will he work with a speech coach to develop a southern drawl? We won't forget Samuel because Wheatley is almost a clone!
