Terrance Wheatley

18 August 2010

The secondary won the game for the Patriots. CB Terrance Wheatley deflected a pass in the endzone and made a great tackle on a boot-legging QB Chase Daniel inside the five to force a game-tying field goal. And S Sergio Brown made the hit that led to Eric Alexander’s sealing interception. Wheatley is fighting for a roster spot and probably has to beat out Jonathan Wilhite for a nickel of dime back role. And rookie free agent Brown needs to make a good enough impression to make the practice squad or possibly the active roster.

On the cusp of training camp, I was really looking forward to CB Terrance Wheatley. In his lone start in his rookie season, Wheatley was in Marvin Harrison’s back pocket. He mirrored Indianapolis’ primary receiver step for step and defended two passes that night.

New England took action to replace him by drafting Terrance Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite in the 2008 draft.

The following off-season, after witnessing the failure of last year’s decisions (promoting Ellis Hobbs to right corner back and signing Deltha O’Neal), the Pats again addressed the problem area by drafting Darius Butler and signing veterans Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden.

ive set.

Defensive back: Besides Jones, there’s not much hope for Jamar Love, unless Terrance Wheatley is a surprise cut.

Wide receiver: Terrance Nunn was a training camp star and showed it against Cincinnati. He probably won’t get past Greg Lewis or Joey Galloway. Matt Slater might avoid the hatchet due to his special teams play. Raymond Ventrone hung on for four years, but this might be it for the converted safety.

Rookie CB Darius Butler was a returner in college, CB Terrance Wheatley had the dual role as well, and WR Matt Slater was drafted, in part, for his return skills, though he hasn’t done well returning kickoffs. He averaged 14 yards and had two fumbles before the coaching staff pulled Slater off of the return team. Matt might get another chance.

t for two starting positions: veteran free agentss Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden, 2008 draft picks Terrance Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite, and 2009 draft pick Darius Butler. The early favorites probably are the veterans, but the pups will be on heels of Springs and Bodden, angling to snag a role in the secondary.

Whether it was injuries (safety Rodney Harrision and CB Terrance Wheatley) or just overall lack of ability (CBs Deltha O’Neal and Lewis Sanders), New England’s secondary was repeatedly picked apart.

While all the experts seemingly declare cornerback the Patriots’ biggest need, I’ve held firm in my opinion that OLB should be first, and maybe second on the team’s needs. Just like a quality CB, experts had a short memory and forgot NE drafted two corners in last year’s draft, Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite.

Second round pick Terrance Wheatley played with the first unit while Jonathan Wilhite got a lot of snaps as the third corner. It's too early to read into it and believe they will remain with the first group.
