Sebastian Vollmer

25 July 2010

Most of the rookies might already be in attendance, but training camp doesn't officially begin until the veterans show up on Thursday. In anticipation, I spoke with FootballOutsiders.com creator Aaron Schatz and got his take on what to look for during camp:

tt Light, Logan Mankins (RFA), Dan Koppen, Stephen Neal, Nick Kaczur, Mark LeVoir, Rich Ohrnberger, Sebastian Vollmer, Ryan Wendell, George Bussey, Dan Connolly Need: 3

The stats say New England quarterbacks were sacked just 18 times, a fantastic number that is slightly over one sack per game. But memory paints a different picture. Brady took a pounding last year as defenses came after him, believing Brady’s recovery, both physically and mentally, coupled with unfriendly reminders of a relentless pass rush, would throw Brady off. And at times, it worked.

On offense WR Julian Edelman and OT Sebastian Vollmer returned to action as well.

2. It’s a little embarrassing that the Patriots couldn’t force a Carolina turnover even though the Panthers are near the top in turnovers lost. It’s doubly-embarrassing that New England turned the ball over three times to the Panthers. The icing on the cake was the eight dropped passes by the offense.

It’s not surprising for people to get high on the performance of a surprising rookie. OT Sebastian Vollmer was thrust into a starting role after Matt Light went down with an injury.

Advantage: Pryor

Offensive Tackle – Experts said the selection of Sebastian Vollmer was a developmental pick, a reach in the second round. Well he’s started two games thus far and he more than held his own. Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe and Michael Oher all have more starts than Vollmer, but only Monroe is listed as a starter at left tackle. Advantage: Rookies

And when LT Matt Light went down, Sebastian Vollmer stepped right in without the offense losing a beat.

Butler, Chung, and Vollmer deserve praise for their play thus far, but out of the spotlight, long snapper Jake Ingram has been flawless. He would get my vote for rookie of the first half.

Though LT Matt Light sat out last week, rookie Sebastian Vollmer stepped in and the line didn’t lose a step. In fact it was Vollmer’s block that sprung Maroney on the 45-yard score.

Wesley Britt and George Bussey probably are closer to the edge as Sebastian Vollmer established himself.

Tight end: If it’s between Ben Watson and Alex Smith, New England will stick with a known commodity. Smith has been awful thus far and gives the Patriots little to no reason to keep him on board.

Three offensive linemen were drafted and very quickly Sebastian Vollmer is getting a lot of time playing left and right tackle. And Kaczur can’t feel comfortable with the huge Ryan O’Callahan ready to throw his weight around.

Second round draft pick Sebastian Vollmer is making a good impression, playing both left and right tackle spots well so far.

Ohrnberger and Richard are in similar boats. Neither is guaranteed to make the team that has plenty of depth along both lines. At least Richard is finally on the field. He needs to catch the eye quickly. Ohrnberger’s sliver of opportunity gets smaller with every passing day.

likely will be the four second round picks, DT Ron Brace, CB Darius Butler, S Patrick Chung, and OT Sebastian Vollmer. And ultimately I expect the drafted dozen to all be under contract by the time training camp starts on July 30th.

Sebastian Vollmer: Sometimes I think Belichick just does it to mess with us. There were two times in the first two rounds where a pick was made and the mock draft-wielding experts didn't have a graphics package prepared.

Otherwise, I'm not wild about S Patrick Chung and OT Sebastian Vollmer. Chung can hit and play the run, but is a liability in pass coverage. and Vollner sounds like a year or two project for the right side.
