Back in February, I wrote an article asking the question should teams draft tight ends in the first round. It was a relevant question because Oklahoma State's Brandon Pettigrew could be the only TE selected within the first 32 picks.

Well it's a clear as day now. In order to get in, the Patriots must win out and get some much needed help.
Assistance wasn't provided last night as Dallas gave away their final game at Texas Stadium to visiting Baltimore. And how the Ravens won was unbelievable. Two consecutive runs gained 159 yards and two touchdowns. The Cowboys looked more like security detail clearing the way through the paparazzi than defenders going in for the tackle.

So I was 4 points off in my prediction last week as the Cardinals clinched the NFC West and with it a playoff birth. With the red birds in they’ll be looking for a favorable match up during wild card weekend, as it is unlikely the Giants will be dethroned as conference champions and one member of the South will undoubtedly take slot 2. The rest of the race is completely up in the air. Arizona can help shape their destiny today going against Minnesota, who is narrowly holding down a playoff spot in the NFC North. The Cardinals looked poised to take the number three spot and judging by the strength of their remaining schedule they can as long as they topple the Vikings. With a difficult game against New England next week Arizona should have an easier going week 17 against the Seahawks.

Next Tuesday the NFL Network will announce the AFC and NFC Pro Bowl teams. Unlike last year, there won't be as many Patriot players sprinkled throughout the roster, but that doesn't mean there are no deserving players on the team. Of course I'm a homer, but I'll try to exercise a bit of common sense and select players who should be on the AFC team:

When Tom Brady went down in the first quarter of the first game this season, the first thought of Patriots fans was if the team could still contend without their biggest star. What they didn't realize was that Brady's injury was a harbinger of things to come all season long.

The game flashed before my eyes on Sunday when Seattle quarterback Seneca Wallace ran by Patriots rookie CB Jonathan Wilhite. It shouldn't had happened. Wilhite let up, thinking was going to run out of bounds. Instead Wallace turned upfield for a 23-yard gain and a first down. I immediately feared it was the 1997 Divisional loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers all over again.

1-for-13.
That was the number of third down conversions out of the number of chances last week for the Patriots. Just once when facing third down did New England get a first down. Even more frustrating was the only first down conversion was the final offensive play, when the outcome was not in doubt.

In every NFL draft there is at least one position that is laden with talent. More often than not, this fresh crop of virtuosos wastes very little time in announcing its presence to the rest of the NFL. The hype swells over the course of training camp and preseason, but it all counts for nothing until the promise actually manifests itself on the playing field during the regular season. We’ve seen years (like the class of 2006) that were so diverse they defied designation. We’ve also had years (like the class of 2005) that were a little more singular in positional depth. This year, I believe, we can officially label as “The Year of the Running Back.”

After seven rounds and 252 picks, one thing stands out. 41 defensive linemen were drafted and 39 offensive linemen were granted employment.
