San Francisco 49ers

4 August 2009

I’m not much of a poker player, but since the beginning of training camp, head coach Bill Belichick has been exchanging cards, looking for a full house.

They looked at QB Cleo Lemon. DE Kevin Carter seems to be getting serious consideration. QB Matt Gutierrez was cut and QB Andrew Walter signed to replace Gutz.

In the world of journalism, it's the greatest compliment when an article you wrote inspires others to express their own opinion on the same subject.

Back in February, I wrote an article asking the question should teams draft tight ends in the first round. It was a relevant question because Oklahoma State's Brandon Pettigrew could be the only TE selected within the first 32 picks.

A few teams that come to mind are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, and the San Francisco 49ers.

Not that there aren't any AFC teams that Cassel would be a good fit for, but I wouldn't trade him to direct competition. One rumor had Cassel being pursued by the New York Jets if Brett Favre retires. The Jets are a playoff ready team that doesn't have the patience for the unproven Kellen Clemens and his growing pains.

I can't believe I'm about to say this. It makes me feel dirty just thinking about it. But it's what has to be done.

Go Jets.

Ugh! I'm gonna need a shower.

As much as I despise New York and their teams (the Yankees once again came through with more than $400 million reasons to hate them more this off-season), for once, I want the Jets to win.

Another week is in the books in the National Football League as we head to Week 15. But first let's take a look back at the week that was...Week 14! (my tongue is getting twisted) Several surprising outcomes this past Sunday including a few of the games I picked. I went a disappointing 1-3 in my picks. Very poor performance on my part. I'm finally realizing I'll never have a grip on the NFL. It's the most inconsistent professional sport out there. Any team can lose on any given week. But enough sulking, let's get on to this week's Fallout Report!

ately for Texans fans.

Winners - Green Bay Packers

2) New York Jets @ San Francisco 49ers

The Jets were surprised at home by the Denver Broncos last Sunday. This week they fly into San Francisco to take on the 4-8 49ers. Jets are 0-2 in the West Coast this season (losses against San Diego and Oakland). I however have a feeling that Brett Favre and company will bounce back after last week. The AFC East is still up for grabs and I believe that the Jets will hang on to sole possession of first. The 49ers are not a good football team. So I'll go with the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets in this one. Ring it up.

I see the Browns winning a 'squeaker'.

Winners - Cleveland Browns

2) San Francisco 49ers @ Dallas Cowboys

This is what the Cowboys need. A winnable game at home. The 49ers are 3-7 (2nd though in the NFC West if you can believe that). The Cowboys need to keep winning to stay in the thick of the NFC East. Terrell Owens and Roy Williams should see the ball quite often (start em in Fantasy!) and the Cowboys should roll in this one.

One highlight I can truly say was watching Mike Singletary take over as coach of the San Francisco 49ers. It did my heart good to see an old school Gridiron great out there coaching the old school way. Say what you will, I loved it.

Wednesday Blast!

Somewhere the Tuna is smiling…

Hello Blast fans,

It’s that time again, time to do some blasting and we got some great stuff from Frisco, KC and everywhere else. Now since there are an extremely large amount of blasts with a number of unsavory words. I take it upon myself to replace them and still keep the original statements intact.

Week 7 is officially in the books as Tuesday, the 21st of October rolls around today. This week's Fallout report will cover the most interesting games from the week 7 slate in the National Football League. The alarm is going off in Big D as the Cowboys struggle for the second week in a row to find a win, the Vikings put up 41 in a loss, and Brett Farve gets the ball three times in overtime against the struggling Raiders, but can't chip any points in. I'll cover those happenings....right now!

NFC East

Week 7 preview

Hello East fans,

As we head into the critical part of the season, the East sets up for a huge weekend of football. Last week’s slip up by every team except Philly made the race a lot tighter. We do not know if Mr. Jessica Simpson will play this Sunday after speaking with Brett over the week. Eli seems to have a injury similar to SuperFive’s and the Skins are wondering if they really lost to the Rams or not.

Quick question: Would you like a durable running back?

OK, that was a rhetorical question. With alternating LaMont Jordan missing every other game and Laurence "issues" Maroney available for only three of five games this year, it would be nice to have someone the team can count on to help carry the load with Sammy Morris. While the Patriots did rush for more than 100 yards against San Diego, 29 of those yards came from QB Matt Cassel on seven carries.

Week 6

NFC East

Week 6

Hello East Fans,

Well after a week of Hiatus to curse the football gods for my team’s embarrassing losses. I felt a preview of the Best division in Football was the only way to quench the thirst. Every team in the division except for Washington is on the road, let’s start with the leaders of the pack.

Football writer Ron Borges is getting a second chance, now working for The Boston Herald. But he won't even give a rookie a first chance.

Included in his first report card on Tuesday, Borges lists three stars and three duds. LB Shawn Crable was listed as a dud for not making the active roster against San Francisco. Is that fair?

The Boston Globe is reporting that QB Tom Brady had successful surgery to repair his injured knee on Monday. The anticipated recovery time is about six to eight months.

Since it is October, we'll project that Brady will be ready to practice between February and April. He will be a participant in mini-camps most likely and absolutely training his butt off in the weight room.

It was an interesting week in the National Football League. A few surprises, a big meltdown by one team and one bruised and battered team found a way to win a big prime-time game. Let's get right to it--game by game.

I'd rather wait until I re-watch the game, but that won't happen until tomorrow morning. For now, I just want to say a few things before the Red Sox eliminate the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim:

There were two things that QB Matt Cassel did that I really liked. 1. He threw the ball away. That throw-away was during a first half drive that reached the red zone. Instead of forcing a pass into coverage or holding on too long and taking a sack, he avoided a negative play. It kept the team in position to come away with some points, a K Stephen Gostowski field goal. 2. Matt tucked the ball and ran. Though he only gained five yards on four carries on the day, developing the feel of when to abandon the play and get as many yards as possible will be valuable in the long run. It may be the first step towards gaining that sixth sense known as pocket presence.

OK defense, show us what you're made of.

The defense knew they had to be the backbone of this team as QB Matt Cassel felt his way around leading the offense. They did for two wins against the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, including impressive goal line stands in each game.

The Patriots are already on the Left Coast, waiting for a 4:15 kickoff against the San Francisco 49ers. ating himself, then did The Boston Globe make up the visual of Moss discussing preparations for the San Francisco 49ers with QB Matt Cassel in the locker room?

I get the feeling people are waiting for Moss to fail. I won't go as far as they want Randy to fail, but they do think when the going gets tough, Moss folds like a tent. They point to examples during the Miami game: There's Moss sitting all by himself, isolating himself from the team instead of trying to rally the troops. Look at Moss with his head down, obviously disappointed that he's not getting the ball. See that incompletion? It was a catch-able ball. That was because Moss didn't go after that pass.

The Crying Game

The Terrell Owens story

Hello NFL fans,

Well here we are, week four of the third year with his last team. This will be his last team, I truly believe that. If I were an owner I would rather get a letter full of anthrax and then imprisoned IN Cuba to spend the rest of my days. The continuous onslaught of reporters and fans condemning my name and wanting my head on a stick would be too much for me to bare.

Believe. Believe. It’s the one word in sports that says so much but says so little. You’ve seen signs in every NFL stadium at some point with this simple word. ”Believe.” When MLB baseball approaches the postseason every year, the word reappears. “Believe.” But believe in what I ask you? Do the Chicago Cubs “believe” that they will win a World Championship? Or do they “believe” that some strange twist of fate will ruin another promising season. What does your team “believe” in?

Originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round out of Texas A&M, Webster started 44 of 53 games played for San Fran, totaling seven interceptions and 18 passes defensed.
