Ryan Fitzpatrick

26 September 2011

Another ignominious goose egg goes to the defense that came up with zero sacks of Buffalo QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. It doesn’t take an economics major to know a quarterback in a comfortable pocket will pick apart any secondary. New England is allowing a whopping 377 yards per game through the air this season. Maybe if the defense charged baggage fees it would deter opponents from passing so much.

Apparently saving lives isn’t as important as hospitalizing receivers.

Ryan Fitzpatrick might had been viewed the same way. He was a four-year player for Harvard University and graduated with a degree in economics. Fitzpatrick scored 48 out of 50 on the NFL Combine’s Wonderlic test in just nine minutes. With intelligence oozing out of his ears, Fitzpatrick had to wait until the seventh round to be selected by St. Louis in 2005.

They lead the league in interceptions with 24 after picking off QB Ryan Fitzpatrick three times. New England is eighth in fumbles recovered.

Before the season I expected the defense to be a bend but don’t break unit and they are more than living up to it. How accurately they’re executing that approach is scary. Despite being the best thieves, New England is 27th in yards allowed, 30th in passing yards allowed.

Sorry if Harvard product QB Ryan Fitzpatrick gets turned into a human piñata for the afternoon, but the Patriots coaching staff is still learning about the abilities of their players. Figuring out the best pass rushers would go a long way towards improving the defense.

1. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick should feel honored. New England’s defense used the “everyone stand around” pass rush. It was first introduced when the Patriots played against Drew Bledsoe in 2002. Years later it was used against QB Tom Brady. I think it was the New York Jets when coached by Eric Mangini that turned the tables. That’s good company to be in for Fitzpatrick.

I think Thomas wants out as soon as the season is over.

So how’s QB Ryan Fitzpatrick doin’? Well it’s never easy going from back-up to starting down the stretch. But Fitzie is a smart kid. He’s Harvard educated. He’ll figure it all out.
