Not lost in the movements is the trade of reserve guard/center Russ Hochstein to Denver for a seventh round pick and finally reaching a deal with third round draft pick LB Tyrone McKenzie. And the Patriots got an early start on trimming the roster when they released S Tank Williams.

Soon after the trade, they re-signed S James Sanders and G Russ Hochstein.

Now they couldn't keep everybody. WR Jabar Gaffney, RB LaMont Jordan, and LS Lonnie Paxton were awarded new contracts elsewhere. Of course the Pats aren't sitting free agency out. RB Fred Taylor should be an upgrade over Jordan, and TE Chris Baker is a reliable target that should fit in well in the offense.

Rosie was joined by S Rodney Harrison, CB Tyrone Poole, G/C Russ Hochstein, and valuable special teamer LB Don Davis.

If this is a Patriots spending year, despite the struggling economy, who should they go after? I'm in favor of a trade for RB Larry Johnson. He's costly, but his price might be down a little since he publicly declared he wants out of Kansas City.

Reserves Ryan O'Callaghan, Billy Yates and Russ Hochstein also didn't make an appearance. That means another patchwork O-line for Friday night's game.

It's so bad right now that New England worked out former Baltimore Ravens C/G Matt Flynn. Maybe things wouldn't be so bad if the two late free agent O-line signees, Anthony Clement and Barry Stokes, weren't placed on injured reserve for the year.
