Well on Saturday night I was in St. Petersburg, Florida to watch the Boston Red Sox take on their kryptonian-nemesis in recent times, the Tampa Bay Rays. The National League West is not a division too many people are getting overly excited about entering the 2009 season. The return of Manny Ramirez to Los Angeles has made the Dodgers the division’s lone true contender for the World Series. Arizona will go as far as its pitching takes it, which could be far, but other than that, there’s not a whole lot to pontificate upon. Yet, somehow, I still managed to write 1,383 words.

It was about 1 year ago when young pitcher Clay Buchholz threw a no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles in only his 2nd major league start. 1 year later, Buchholz has struggled and is currently 2-9 with a 6.75 ERA; losing 7 straight decisions. After a 11-6 loss to the O's, manager Terry Francona announced that Buchholz was demoted to Double A Portland.

ut he seems to be a bit more personable than he was last fall, when he avoided a painful death from Red Sox fans by rocking the grand slam against Cleveland. But JD's been the man this year - with Papi out of the lineup, we'd be screwed with a capital S if it weren't for him. So I'm letting him slide on last year a little, and looking forward to a few more outbursts in the dugout that prove he's still alive.

Then there's the 37 year-old Doug Mirabelli, The Boston Red Sox back up catcher.  The Sanfrancisco Giants selected him out of Witchital State in 1992.  He was touted as a good catcher with some pop in his bat.  Up until the last 3 years or so, I'd say he sort of fit that description.  He did a good job behind the plate with or without Wakerfield, and he took one out of the yard every now and then.  I'll painfully admit that we do still need him to catch Wake, especially after seeing what happened a couple of years ago when Mirabelli went to the San Diego Padres.
