Pat Chung

n shuffle between to find the right combination for any situation.

A case can be made that Pat Chung has been the Pats’ best defensive player this year. He’s second on the team in tackles, despite missing two games. He also has two interceptions, one returned 51 yards for a score. Chung has added value for his prowess on special teams. In a tour de force performance against Miami, Chung blocked a punt and a field goal, the latter returned 35 yards for a touchdown.

On third and two at the seven yard line, S Pat Chung delivered a hit to prevent a touchdown to start the fourth quarter. On the next drive, D-linemen Vince Wilfork and Gerrard Warren combined to stop a third and one quarterback sneak. Two three and outs took place in overtime.

Expect a bigger contribution from them, as well as S Pat Chung, DL Ron Brace and WR Brandon Tate getting on the field often in 2010.

And this year’s class of rookies could be as good, if not better. CB Devin McCourty and LB Brandon Spikes could be starters. TEs Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez likely will surpass the contribution of the duo they are replacing, Benjamin Watson and Chris Baker. Zoltan Mesko is the new punter. And DL Brandon Deaderick made the active roster as a seventh round selection.

He didn’t cause any turnovers, but S Pat Chung tackled solidly and allowed almost zero yards after the catch.

6. If I’m G Logan Mankins watching the game from home, I felt my footing slip a little bit. Dan Connolly and the first string offensive line did a good job keeping the blitzing Saints off of QB Tom Brady and opening holes for the running game.

erod Mayo or has Brandon Spikes already nudged the Georgia Tech product aside? We’ll see if S Pat Chung can take the first step toward warding off challengers James Sanders and Brandon McGowan. And if WR Wes Welker sits this one out, who is the back-up plan?

Bodden, Darius Butler, Jonathan Wilhite, Terrence Wheatley, Brandon Merriweather, Brandon McGowan, Pat Chung, Kyle Arrington, James Sanders

Cornerback Need: 4

Bodden established himself as the top corner on the team. But who will start opposite of Bodden? Based on his rookie season, Butler looks like he has the potential to start on the left side. Wilhite had his chance last year and failed. Springs was decent when he played, but he started just eight games. Wheatley slipped further down the depth chart. Arrington hasn’t established himself with the team.

He’s tied with rookie safety Pat Chung and receiver Randy Moss in interceptions. Rookie corner back Darius Butler has twice as many interceptions and the same number of passes defended as the third corner.

S Pat Chung picked up his second sack in as many weeks. It was a great call as he came in on a delayed blitz to take down Miami’s Chad Henne.

Extra Point: Congratulations to QB T

Advantage: Even

Safety – Pat Chung was the Patriots’ first pick in ’09. He’s earning more playing time and doing well with those opportunities, with one interception and a sack. But he is way behind Buffalo’s Jarius Byrd with seven interceptions. Chicago’s Al Afalava matches Chung in sacks and nearly doubles Pat’s 17 tackles with 31. Advantage: Rookies

Darius Butler and Pat Chung had small roles early, but are getting more and more time. And when LT Matt Light went down, Sebastian Vollmer stepped right in without the offense losing a beat.

Two more firsts: S Pat Chung’s first sack and Sam Aiken’s first career touchdown. Aiken’s TD was special, and not just how he escaped a couple of tackles. He had to wait until his seventh season for this moment. So he got a contract extension early last week within seven days, Aiken caught his first TD. Life is good.

7 September 2009

Safety Brandon McGowan was a late addition after two rookies, CB Darius Butler and S Pat Chung, were drafted with plans to develop them for down the road.

While the turnover of the secondary was thorough, it seemed the coaches intended to just tweak the front seven, as if slight adjustments would fix everything.

It doesn’t prove much going against third stringers.

Everybody Pat Chung Tonight – The second round pick was targeted early on and he gave up two touchdowns. Hard lessons, but he could be better in the long run.

And Tank Williams’ release locks in Brandon Merriweather, James Sanders, Brandon McGowan and Pat Chung as the safetys.

Other players know they’re just rotation players to keep other fresh during practice. So RB Chirs Taylor, WR Robert Ortiz and DB Herana-Daze Jones, it was nice knowing ya.

rth the drawbacks that come with the total package?

Extra Point – We finally saw why Pat Chung wants the chance to return punts. That 33-yard punt return to set up the game-winning field goal was nice. That made up for the muffed one against Cincinnati. He has one more game to make plays as a punt returner.
