Mike Wright

19 January 2011

They played without DL Ron Brace, Mike Wright, and Myron Pryor. The unit of Brace, Vince Wilfork and Brandon Deaderick was the team’s best run-stopping unit. Wright and Pryor were effective pass rushers. Without the full rotation, the Jets gained 120 rushing yards and QB Mark Sanchez wasn’t sacked.

hat starts Sunday afternoon.

A few things I’m looking for:

A Thin Line: DLs Ron Brace and Mike Wright are on IR and Myron Pryor is doubtful. Jets will be without RT Damien Woody. The reinforcements have to step up big time.

It’s been very noticeable along the defensive line. Mike Wright, Ron Brace, and Myron Pryor have combined to miss eleven games according to me. Wright and Pryor have missed the past four games; Pryor missed the last six.

It doesn’t completely offset the 23 years of experience between NT Vince Wilfork and DEs Mike Wright and Gerard Warren, but at times the unit will show its age. They will miss DE Ty Warren, who is on injured reserve with a torn labrum in his hip.

There’s no shortage of contestants for the spot either. Mike Wright is a favorite to start, but free agents Damione Lewis and Gerard Warren are just the beginning of a fierce brawl about to erupt. Myron Pryor will be in the mix and Ron Brace looks to rebound from a disappointing rookie season. Rookies Kade Weston and Brandon Deaderick will set their sights on just making the team.

g the defensive line is there an abundance of veterans with mainstays Vince Wilfork (28 years old), Mike Wright (28) and Ty Warren (29) welcoming Damione Lewis (32) and Gerard Warren (32). There are plenty of youthful hopefuls, but they aren’t guaranteed snaps, with Myron Pryor a likely exception after an encouraging rookie year.

At the top of the list is Mike Wright. He became the third down specialist, as well as starting nine games. And Wright had five sacks last year.

The two sacks against the Jets were at the very beginning of the game (By NT Mike Wright) and near the end (a coverage sack DE Ty Warren). In between, the pass rush didn’t keep Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez company.

The only long-tenured players are linemen Jarvis Green, Ty Warren, Vince Wilfork, and Mike Wright and safety James Sanders.

Other veterans on the defense were signed as free agents, many signed just this year. While adjusting to a new defense might be easier for them, don’t expect the unit to play as a whole immediately. There will be blown assignments because of mental lapses and lack of trust.

Along with bringing in the 10-year veteran, the Pats re-signed DL Mike Wright. He received serious consideration from Arizona and Denver but opted to stay with the team that gave him his first shot in the league.

o make sure all the ingredients are in place for the defense.

Moving into the trenches, DL Mike Wright is attracting attention. If Wright leaves, a strong rookie season by Clinton McDonald from Memphis would have fans saying, I’m lovin’ McDonald’s play.

prised that LB Adalius Thomas had his best game Sunday (two sacks) and fellow linemen Ty Warren and Mike Wright tallied a sack each in the last two games.

When I predicted the defense would be better this year, the thinking started with a healthy D-line. Seymour says he's healthy for the first time in two years and it's showing now. Whether it was a bad arm or a troublesome knee that held Seymour back in the past, he wasn't the same.

He recovered a fumble in the game.Guyton's fumble was caused by DL Mike Wright, another rookie free agent who was playing in place of an injured DL Jarvis Green. Wright added a tackle for a loss, a quarterback hit, and a sack. The team leader in interceptions is second-year Merriweather. He added his third on Monday night. Merriweather also defended two passes.Signed from the practice squad to restore some depth lost at the running back position, BenJarvis Green-Ellis played the second half for Sammy Morris and averaged five yards a carry. Green-Ellis finished with 65 yards.K Stephen Gostkowski continues to have a breakout year as he added eleven points to the night, including two field goals and five extra points. He missed just one field goal this season, a 48-yarder.DL Le Kevin Smith made the most of his limited playing time by recovering a fumble.OLB Pierre Woods got a quarterback hit on a play that led to an interception.

He only has one sack. NT Vince Wilfork, DEs Ty Warren, Jarvis Green, and Mike Wright haven't tallied one.

Granted, in a 3-4 defense, the OLBs shoulder most of the responsibility of baggin' passers. I knew Mike Vrabel had a career year that wouldn't be repeated. He averaged just over five sacks per season with the Pats. Through four games he has two sacks, which projects to eight sacks for the year.

29 July 2008

Rotate in Jarvis Green and  Mike Wright for pass rush purposes and New England has one of the best and deepest defensive lines in the league.

If they wreck havoc as I expect them, teams won't come close to averaging 98.2 rushing yards a game. Even more, the pass rush will collapse the pocket and make the secondary's job much easier.
