Mike Richardson

With that viewpoint, the Patriots definitely got the better of the deal.

Also, CB Mike Richardson was released. That leaves just one player from the 2007 rookie class (safety Brandon Merriweather) that remains with the team. Hopefully Richardson washed the jersey before turning it in because as quickly as he hung it up, it was on the back of RB Chris Taylor.

Back-ups Against the Wall -The reserves will be called upon to perform well now: CBs Mike Richardson, Jonathan Wilhite, Terrence Wheatley, safetys Ray Ventrone and Antwain Spaan, RB BenJarvis Green-Ellis, and others have to play like pros, not neophytes.

strong safety or promote Brandon Merriweather? Or maybe they turn a corner into a safety, like Mike Richardson? It worked well for a while with Eugene Wilson.

But no one can replace what Rodney Harrison meant to the team. He was a leader in stature and action. He commanded the last line of defense, making sure everyone was aligned correctly.

The Pats haven't given up on Mike Richardson either. Maybe Ty Law is on head coach Bill Belichick's speed dial.

But Hobbs can't concern himself with the players behind him. He has to step up his game and be what the Patriots need: a top flight corner.

three front-runners are Fernando Bryant, Terrence Wheatley, and Jonathan Wilhite, but I'll look for Mike Richardson. He looked promising during last year's preseason. I want to see if he gets in the mix as well.

se positions will be up for grabs between Wilhite, second round pick Terrence Wheatley, second year Mike Richardson, and free agents Fernando Bryant, Jason Webster, and Lewis Sanders.

Is it really as simple as plugging in the holes? It's very possible that Ellis Hobbs gets switched over from RCB to LCB. The left corner typically covers the opponent's primary receiver, the toughest assignment. I can't imagine that head coach Bill Belichick would start a rookie right out of training camp on the most dangerous receiver.

e year on injured reserve, but I think he was tucked away for safe keeping.

I'm talking about Mike Richardson. He was drafted in the sixth round out of Notre Dame and held his own during the preseason before he suffered an arm injury that led to being placed on IR. I expect Richardson to be healthy and ready to compete against the veterans and likely draft pick. But Richardson has an advantage because he has a year learning the system. If he understands his role, the physical part should come easy.
