Belichick had to use WR Julian Edelman at slot corner for a couple of times and WR Matthew Slater started at safety once against the Colts.

And with players going through the secondary like there’s a revolving door (14 different players have taken a snap in the secondary this year), Belichick can’t afford to remove a player with McCourty’s familiarity with the defense from the field.

When Matthew Slater was drafted in 2008, he had experience at UCLA as a receiver, a returner, and safety. His defensive background was fully put to use as he started the game in place of Patrick Chung. Besides finishing with seven total tackles, Slater forced a fumble in the third quarter. Naturally, the ball was recovered by the human loose ball vacuum, CB Kyle Arrington.

He’s had more chances than Taylor Price, Julian Edelman, and Matthew Slater. The coaches see something in Ochocinco that we don’t because the coaches have shown more faith in Ochocinco than the other receivers.

I have to agree with the Pats buzz I've seen around the internets that Matthew Slater will have a hard time making the team this year. Too many players with return experience and Patrick Chung's arrival will eliminate him from the safety depth.
