Kevin Faulk

6 February 2012

It could be a sign of RB Kevin Faulk crossing the finish line. He was deactivated for the game. Faulk returned from an ACL tear this season, but quickly fell to the bottom of the depth chart. If Faulk does hang up his cleats, he might not be alone. G Brian Waters and DLs Gerard Warren and Shawn Ellis may weigh the decision in the off-season.

the burning desire for revenge.

Maybe the remaining eight (Tom Brady, Logan Mankins, Matt Light, Kevin Faulk, Wes Welker, Vince Wilfork, Stephen Gostkowski, and Ross Ventrone) are fueled by revenge. They can pass the experience on to their teammates, but the teammates can’t feel it because they didn’t live through it. It has to belong to the individuals. The experience isn’t transferable.

5 December 2011

It was ruled a fumble when RB Kevin Faulk hit the ground on a three yard gain in the first quarter. But when the replay was shown, head coach Bill Belichick reached for his red challenge flag. After further review, Faulk was down by contact and the play was reversed. Belichick has been money when challenging plays this season. He has won six of eight challenges.

1. It was great to see some familiar faces. RB Kevin Faulk, DT Brandon Deaderick, LB Jerod Mayo, and OT Sebastian Vollmer all returned to action. Faulk, in his first game since being activated off of the physically unable to perform list, started the game in place of BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

He is one of four players participating in team activities, joining running back Kevin Faulk and defensive tackles Ron Brace and Brandon Deaderick.

Head coach Bill Belichick has three weeks to evaluate the quartet and decide whether to add them to the active roster or place them on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

the young stallions into the season, the coaches can feel confident moving on from Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk as they contributed just nine yards this preseason so far.

This production wouldn’t be possible without the stellar play of the offensive line. The unit hasn’t missed a beat with Dan Connolly replacing the retired Stephen Neal at right guard. Left guard Logan Mankins, who held himself out for the first six weeks of 2010 over the lack of a contract extension, was made the highest paid guard in the NFL and is locked up for seven years.

Veterans Kevin Faulk, Sammy Morris, Fred Taylor, and BenJarvus Green-Ellis were all free agents with Green-Ellis, the leading rusher, expected to be back.

I thought through the options. I wanted a veteran to lend his wisdom to Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead. Forget injury-prone Morris and Taylor. Go get Miami’s Ricky Wiliams. The Pats need a good north-south thumper as a compliment.

Now they find themselves behind veterans BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Kevin Faulk, and Sammy Morris. All three were free agents, but only Green-Ellis was a lock to return.

Further hampering Vereen is an apparent hamstring injury suffered Wednesday. He hasn’t practiced since.

Injuries affected depth (DL Ty Warren and CB Leigh Bodden were on IR for the season; RB Kevin Faulk missed most of the year). New England would had been a better team.

But the Pats won’t be the exact same team next year. Faulk and DL Gerard Warren are two of 17 free agents and their return isn’t guaranteed. That’s not necessarily a negative. There’s room for improvement that experience might not take care of. Free agency can shore up a weakness quickly. And if New England continues their success in NFL Draft, some rookies will play from day one.

But after Danny Woodhead, the backfield could be completely different. Woodhead replaced Kevin Faulk this season. Would Bill Belichick keep a duplicate player for sentimental reasons?

Fred Taylor probably gets the most carries since week three. Appreciate them because these will be his last carries as a Patriot, maybe for his career as well. Sammy Morris could see his run in New England come to an end as well.

The Running Back Depth Alert has gone from green to orange. Kevin Faulk’s ACL tear immediately creating an urgent need for another capable running back. Signing former New York Jets WR/RB Danny Woodhead is for more than just espionage now.

enJarvus Green-Ellis, Chris Taylor, Clayton Thomas) doesn’t appear to be a legitimate threat. Kevin Faulk will remain the third down back.

Healthy Competition: I’m not worried about WR Wes Welker or QB Tom Brady. The latter should be his old self for a full season. And based on his appearance during OTAs, Welker will eventually be just fine, despite being placed on the active/physically unable to perform list. I want to see the players who missed all but one game combined last year.

being not a need and 5 being ugent: Runningback

Laurence Maroney, Sammy Moris, Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk, BenJarvus Green-Ellis

Need: 3

Most of Patriot Nation has given up on Maroney. I haven’t. If he runs like he did after the bye for a whole season, he could gain 1,000 yards for the first time in his career, health permitting.

Of the 15 free agents, six I absolutely wanted back: LB Tully Banta-Cain, CB Leigh Bodden, RB Kevin Faulk, K Stephen Gostkowski, OG Logan Mankins, and NT Vince Wilfork. Of those six, three re-signed. And OG Stephen Neal re-signed as well, which is a bonus.

By retaining Banta-Cain and Wilfork, that leaves five I hope go nowhere: CB Leigh Bodden, RB Kevin Faulk, K Stephen Gostkowski, G Logan Mankins, and G Stephen Neal. As for everyone else (DE/LB Derrick Burgess, DE Jarvis Green, P Chris Hanson, LB Pierre Woods, RB Chris Taylor, and TE Ben Waston; LB Junior Seau retired) , the Pats can do better, although I would make an exception for Green.

a starter, and B. a league elite player. So that eliminates RB Kevin Faulk, G Stephen Neal, and LT Matt Light, even with his two Pro Bowl selections.

So with all the turnover on the roster, who becomes the new core of the team? Brady is a given. Offensively we’ve seen the skill players change through the Championships so I’m not including WRs Randy Moss and Wes Welker because the Pats won with Troy Brown and David Patten before. Running back didn’t matter either, as New England upgraded from Antowain Smith to Corey Dillon.

He gained the trust of the coaches and fans to be counted if his number is called. And Kevin Faulk is a top notch third down back, a playmaker as a runner or as a receiver.

This group likely will constitute the backfield for the year. Absent from the quintet is a true blocking fullback.

But if Edelman can be the everyday punt returner and do it well, it keeps veterans Welker and Kevin Faulk form pulling double-duty and keeps them fresh.

Edelman shouldn’t be so surprising if I did my research. The Kent State record he broke was last set by Cleveland’s Joshua Cribbs, another QB-turned returner. Great footsteps for Edelman to follow in, except Julian raised the standard. It would be interesting to see if Edelman could repeat his college feat at the pro level.

Taking away the yards gained or lost by either quarterback, Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk combined for 23 yards on seven carries, slightly better than three yards a pop.

There probably was a focus to get the passing game in sync with QB Tom Brady playing his first game since September as well as taking the first step towards restoring his confidence in his reconstructed knee. Throwing the ball plays to the Patriots’ strength, but they have to run the ball to keep defenses honest.

But if Laurence stays healthy and runs hard, he will lead the backfield quintet. If he needs advice on how to bounce back, all he has to do is ask Fred.

Add third down back Kevin Faulk and the Pats have a rotation that enables them to run all day long if needed.

And when Brady drops back to pass, he has some new targets. WR Joey Galloway was signed to be another deep threat to compliment Moss. Before Galloway came on board, the Pats traded for Greg Lewis to fill the possession receiver spot since Jabar Gaffney signed with Denver.

Before any reserve receiver gets on the field, he must wait for Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Kevin Faulk to be targeted. Galloway has name recognition, but he's no better than Lewis or Sam Aiken because the number of opportunities won't be great.

The remaining carries go to Kevin Faulk because the offense plays with four wide outs often. Faulk is very effective running out of a spread formation and is a reliable target out of the backfield.

But rather than take the PAT, Belichick opted for a two-point try, which failed when Kevin Faulk's rump touched the turf before he stretched the ball over the goal line. This gaffe was magnified later, when Indy answered with a scoring drive of its own and added a successful two-point try, building a 15-12 advantage.

Keep sending RBs Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, Heath Evans, and company down Denver's throat.

Ty Law getting four interceptions against Peyton Manning in a snow storm. Troy Brown picking off opposing quarterbacks 3 times despite being an offensive player his entire career. Willie McGinest stopping Edgerrin James on fourth and goal at the one yard line. That was what Patriots football was all about. It was their smash mouth, in-your-face toughness and desire that beat opponents.

was a ticky-tack, stringing together long drives compromised of short/midrange passes to guys like Kevin Faulk and David Givens, with tough short yardage gains by Antowain Smith. Defense was a matter of bending without breaking. This was a team that beat teams with players like Randall Gay (undrafted), Earthwind Moreland (practice player), and Troy Brown (veteran wide receiver) on defense. They weren't the best players, they weren't the fastest or the strongest, but they played hard and found ways to win (say, for example, by stopping the Colts four times on the goal line with seconds left in the game).
