Would Cassel work out with the Kansas City Chiefs if K.C. doesn't believe in neither Brodie Croyle nor Tyler Thigpen? Sure. Maybe the Chiefs are two years away from being a playoff team, but don't take the chance of having Cassel knock the Patriots out of the playoffs somewhere down the road.

Would the New York Jets have a slim chance of getting into the playoffs tomorrow if Kellen Clemens started 16 games while Brett Favre remained retired? I don't think so.
There are teams that would still be playoff teams without their starter under center. Pittsburghwould be fine as long as Byron Leftwich avoided mistakes. Kerry Collins led teams to the NFC Championship and Super Bowl before joining Tennessee. His maturity and ability to avoid mistakes trumps Vince Young's otherworldly athleticism.

Kellen Clemens never saw him. When the young quarterback dropped back in the pocket with six minutes left in the second quarter, he thought he had Jerricho Cotchery open on an out route. With little hesitation, he gunned the ball in the direction of his top receiver and watched it go for six. Unfortunately, for Clemens and Jets fans, those six points belonged to the opposing team, the Dallas Cowboys. Cornerback Terence Newman easily undercut the route and used his world-class speed to return the pass 50 yards down the sideline for his first touchdown of the season. Broken and overmatched, the Jets would lose the contest 34-3.

The good news for Clemens is he probably won't sit for long. Part of what made last season fun for Favre was that the Packers won the division and were a win away from the Super Bowl. That's not gonna happen with the Jets. New York was 4-12 last season and I don't expect Favre to be a six win difference for the Jets. Maybe they go 8-8 or optimistically 9-7 and sneak into the playoffs. Then the off-season waffling game begins again as New York experiences what G.B.'s front office dealt with for the past four years: Waiting to see if Favre returns or retires. If it's a losing season, I believe Favre hangs it up for good.
