Junior Seau

8 December 2010

He remembers what Willie McGinest and Junior Seau did for the Patriots and Spikes wants to be a playmaker like they were.

Just weeks into the preseason, I linked TEs Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez to past Patriots greats Ben Coates and Marv Cook by the numbers assigned to the rookies. It’s unknown if a message is being sent to Gronk (87) and Hernandez (85), but Spikes made it a personal and public challenge to himself before taking a snap in a game.

As Belichick mulls his decisions, hopefully he extends an offer to retired LB Junior Seau to be a linebackers coach.

Seau sounds committed to not playing again. But as a football lifer with 20 years NFL experience, hopefully the jones to be close to the game tugs Junior’s heart strings enough that he replaces the shoulder pads with a team logo polo shirt.

Fortunately, two were made for him.

LB Junior Seau announced his second retirement. This time he says it is permanent. He wants to spend his days surfing. And defensive coordinator Dean Pees, whose contract expired, won’t resign and will pursue other options.

9 December 2009

Guyton lost snaps to veteran Junior Seau for the first time this season. They all look like they need a kick in the pants.

Being sent home in front of the whole team is humiliating and humbling at the same time. There isn’t a better way to make an example out of players than by embarrassing them in front of everybody.

The second one preceded the game-securing Brady interception.

4. Junior Seau finally was part of the rotation at ILB after standing on the sideline since mop-up duty against Tampa Bay. He finished with two tackles.

On the cusp of training camp, I was really looking forward to CB Terrance Wheatley. In his lone start in his rookie season, Wheatley was in Marvin Harrison’s back pocket. He mirrored Indianapolis’ primary receiver step for step and defended two passes that night.

Brady’s record when he throws for at least 300 yards dropped to 25-3.

6. LB Junior Seau’s winning streak came to an end. He was a part of 25 consecutive wins if I am not mistaken.

That was not nice. I was starting to feel sorry for the Titans. That kind of beating you only wish for your worst enemies (New York Jets) or someone you have a vendetta against (Denver Broncos for that OT loss).

Well the deal we’ve been waiting for finally happened today. LB Junior Seau signed with the Patriots for the remainder of the season. Welcome back, old man. Derrick Burgess, hand over your jersey. You can’t have 54, 56 or 57. How does something in the 90s sound?

Remember how Willie McGinest was irked when Junior Seau signed with the Patriots and was allowed to wear “55” right after Willie left for Cleveland? Well it sounds like McGinest wants to erase the years the fraud wore his number.

“55” wouldn’t had been assigned to anybody if it wasn’t for the signing of Junior Seau, the reason McGinest wore the number at USC. As of right now, no one dons the nickels jersey and I don’t expect that to change.

Junior Seau, I love ya man, but I hope Bruschi is the reason you stay on your surf board all year long.

was another visit to the bargain bin that yielded just WR Jabar Gaffney and a out of retirement LB Junior Seau.

That was proceeded by a quantity over quality crop with hits (WR Tim Dwight, QB Doug Fluite) and misses (LB Monty Beisel, WR David Terrell). That was a break in the alternating pattern, but the year before they went high end.

Mayo and the returning LBs (Junior Seau and Rosevelt Colvin) must return to their standards quickly.

Identity Check - The Patriots can't afford to play to the level of their competition. From start to finish, it must be Patriots football. Get an early lead, build on it, then put your adversary away.

Will the return of LBs Rosevelt Colvin and Junior Seau make a difference? Only time will tell. One thing I do know is Seymour, with Vince Wilfork an exception, is playing at a higher level than his mates along the D-line. The team needs him on first, second, and especially third down.

They had to get extra resourceful by reeling in Rosie Colvin and Junior Seau back from Mr. Mom duties and hangin' 10.

It doesn't completely bother me that the Pats excavated these two former players and put them back on the field. They were good in previous stints with New England. But I've been waiting for Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli to overhaul the position like they did the offensive line, defensive line, and secondary.

If Thomas is placed on IR, what are the Patriots' options? I don't think Junior Seau is interested in playing again, especially under these circumstances. The only back-up left is Pierre Woods, and I'm not high on the kid.

They want to walk away on their own terms. I was glad when LB Junior Seau returned for a second season with the Patriots. His first year was cut short when Seau broke his arm against the Chicago Bears. The encore year resulted in a 16-0 regular season and being minutes away from the championship ring that eluded Seau for 18 seasons. Tough ending, but it's better than softly walking towards the locker room, holding the broken wing at a 90 degree angle.

Empty the bench.

Last year's team was an all-or-nothing squad to a degree. LB Junior Seau was chasing the ring that eluded him for 18 years. CBs Asante Samuel and Randal Gay were free agents, as was S Eugene Wilson. The deal they signed WR Donte Stallworth to was a one year contract in disguise.

Don't coax Culpepper out of retirement like they did for LB Junior Seau. It would be nice reuniting Culpepper with WR Randy Moss, but it won't happen. Find an active vet if the Pats desire more experience behind Tom Brady.

t why even discuss it? When you're talking about a team that gave another chance to the likes of LB Junior Seau and S John Lynch, it sounds like a move New England would do. Hell, they're allegedly still talking to CB Ty Law about a possible return. Why not Colvin too?

He was rankled that the team allowed Junior Seau to wear the number McGinest made famous. But the funny thing is, McGinest wore 55 for USC in part because Seau helped make the number what it is. The number had gone full circle.

ignore his measurables.

The second line of the Patriots' defense is guarded by 30-year olds. Junior Seau is 39, Tedy Bruschi is 34, and Adalius Thomas is 30. They cut Rosevelt Colvin during the off-season, though the Patriots could bring him back.
