Jonathan Wilhite

15 December 2009

The secondary had a few familiar faces back. CB Shawn Springs played and CB Jonathan Wilhite and S James Sanders both returned to the starting lineup. On offense WR Julian Edelman and OT Sebastian Vollmer returned to action as well.

He finished with two tackles.

5. Just as I moaned about the play of CB Jonathan Wilhite, Darius Butler got the start in his place. He was treated like a rookie as Miami constantly tested him. Welcome to the league, Butler.

Heck, I was hoping he would be better.

But when the preseason games started, Jonathan Wilhite out-played Wheatley, and it was obvious. Wilhite even got a 99-yard pick six against Washington. It was an arousing appetizer for what I hoped would be a better meal of a season.

length at receiver this season that would be difficult for Terrence Wheatley (5’9”) and Jonathan Wilhite (5’11”) to handle.

Springs and Bodden are regular contributors to the defense, but today we see exactly their value to the team as they must cover a tall and athletic group of Atlanta receivers.

New England took action to replace him by drafting Terrance Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite in the 2008 draft.

The following off-season, after witnessing the failure of last year’s decisions (promoting Ellis Hobbs to right corner back and signing Deltha O’Neal), the Pats again addressed the problem area by drafting Darius Butler and signing veterans Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden.

Well Lit: Was it just me, or did New York go after CB Jonathan Wilhite in the second half? A lot of the passing yards in the second half seemingly came at his expense.

It bodes well that New England’s defense forced a field goal and Jonathan Wilhite picked off a pass and returned it for a score. There is room for improvement, though. Darius Butler’s pass interference set up the Redskins’ first touchdown. It was a costly 23-yard penalty.

CB Jonathan Wilhite wasn’t beat deep and Darius Butler got an interception to prevent a 2-point conversion. Safetys Tank Williams and Brandon Merriweather blitzed well.

Pass Rush – Rob Ninkovich got good pressure against second and third units. What will he do against better competition? Tully Banta-Cain and Myron Pryor got a sack each.

itions: veteran free agentss Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden, 2008 draft picks Terrance Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite, and 2009 draft pick Darius Butler. The early favorites probably are the veterans, but the pups will be on heels of Springs and Bodden, angling to snag a role in the secondary.

They will also hope a year of experience for Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite makes a positive difference. And of course New England just drafted Darius Butler.

But that wasn’t enough as Hobbs was swept out like shards from the broken secondary.

a short memory and forgot NE drafted two corners in last year’s draft, Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite

If all goes well, these two will be the corners of the future. But for now, the team would like to take it slow with the young talents. Let them play nickel or dime until they are ready for the spotlight.

New England's cornerbacks measure 5-9 Ellis Hobbs, 5-11 Jonathan Wilhite, and 5-11 Deltha O'Neal.

Thankfully, it looks like Boldin will not play Sunday. But even without him, the Pats' secondary are at a disadvantage.

flashed before my eyes on Sunday when Seattle quarterback Seneca Wallace ran by Patriots rookie CB Jonathan Wilhite. It shouldn't had happened. Wilhite let up, thinking was going to run out of bounds. Instead Wallace turned upfield for a 23-yard gain and a first down. I immediately feared it was the 1997 Divisional loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers all over again.

how far down the depth chart the coaches will go, but this will be a baptism by fire for rookie CBs Jonathan Wilhite and Terrence Wheatley. They couldn't of imagined a tougher assignment.

WRs Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, and Anthony Gonzalez aren't the biggest or the fastest, but are very quick with great hands. But what makes them special is the chemistry they built with Manning. They know what each other are thinking and their timing is impeccable. Manning isn't having his typical season and Harrison is slowing down, but they are a better combination than 95 percent of of the QB-WR combos in the league.

Can We Play? - Rookies LB Jerod Mayo and CBs Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite I expect to play a lot. Mayo will start inside with LB Tedy Bruschi. Wheatley might start, but more likely he and Wilhite will play nickel and dime roles. But when the Patriots are up by 30 or more in the fourth, I want to see the other rookies. Keep your helmets close by Crable, O'Connell, Slater, and Guyton.

Two rookies, Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite, are green, but could develop quickly if thrown into the fire. And free agents Fernando Bryant and Lewis Sanders are crafty veterans that lack elite credentials, but can get the job done. The Pats haven't given up on Mike Richardson either. Maybe Ty Law is on head coach Bill Belichick's speed dial.

r their belt.

With that understanding, CB Jason Webster was sent packing so Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite can get their shot. But at the same time, talent trumps potential. That's why RB/FB Kyle Eckel's days with the Pats are over. You don't keep a fringe player over a former 1,000-yard runner with soft hands.

As reported Thursday, the Patriots signed third round pick CB Jonathan Wilhite. most assume he will compete for either Assante Samuel's starting job or Randall Gay's third corner spot. Those positions will be up for grabs between Wilhite, second round pick Terrence Wheatley, second year Mike Richardson, and free agents Fernando Bryant, Jason Webster, and Lewis Sanders.

There are also the three free agent corners signed and safety Tank Williams added to the roster. New England will be fine without Andrews.
