Jermaine Cunningham

the draft, selecting Ryan Claridge, Jeremy Mincey, Justin Rogers, and Shawn Crable over the years. Jermaine Cunningham is the first OLB selected by Belichick in the second round, so many hope Cunningham dramatically improves on his one sack rookie year.

As good as CB Devin McCourty, LBs Brandon Spikes and Jermaine Cunningham, TEs Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, DLs Brandon Deaderick and Kyle Love, and punter Zoltan Mesko were, there is a lot of room for improvement.

And when was the last time we heard OLB Jermaine Cunningham’s name?

Whether any of these conclusions have any validity, the time off will only help the rookies find a second wind. The veterans are warning the kids that playoff intensity is much higher from the regular season. They have to figure out how to raise their game for the Divisionals.

OLB Jermaine Cunningham became a starter three games into the season. Brandon Deaderick worked his way into the D-line rotation. Heck even rookie free agents Dane Fletcher and Kyle Love are making contributions this season.

on, Tully Banta-Cain’s production is on pace to fall well short of his career high last year. Jermaine Cunningham has just one sack, though he did deliver the pressure that led to a game-sealing interception against Indianapolis. Rob Ninovich isn’t a consistent pass rusher. Shawn Crable was cut in favor of Pierre Woods, who was cut in favor of Eric Moore.

LB Brandon Spikes is playing like an established veteran since day one. OLB Jermaine Cunningham missed training camp but played his way into the starting lineup. He was at his best Sunday with a sack and Cunningham drew a holding penalty. And DL Brandon Deaderick, a seventh round pick, worked his way into the rotation and was awarded a sack.

He’s been a near-non factor and is at risk of losing his starting job to Jermaine Cunningham

The rookie didn’t play in week one but he flashed some ability to beat his blocker against the Jets. Hopefully that wasn’t just a one game thing as the Patriots need someone that can consistently collapse the pocket on teams other than the Bills.

amily: Solid games by University of Florida alums (RB Fred Taylor, DL Gerard Warren, LBs Spikes and Jermaine Cunningham, and TE Hernandez) would help in a major way.

Blitz-22: Will the coaches bring extra heat and leave a young secondary on an island, or do they play coverage and leave Bengals QB Carson Palmer all day in the pocket?

The incumbent makes his case.

Pass Rush Mr. Fix-it? Rookie OLB Jermaine Cunningham could finally take the field and hopefully bring consistent pressure off the edge.

St. Louis Rookies: All the talk is about first pick overall QB Sam Bradford’s start. But I want to see what WR Mardy Gilyard can do. I was high on him as a potential draft pick.

Cunningham: I have no idea what OLB Jermaine Cunningham brings to the team. Is he more run stopper or can he really get after the quarterback? He is one of my biggest curiosities because he was an unexpected selection.

thin at outside pass rushers with OLBs Tully Banta-Cain, Pierre Woods, DE Rob Ninkovich, and rookie Jermaine Cunningham

While Burgess Favres (v: to be indecisive between retirement or playing another year), Patten was sure that he was done. Physically David had it in him, but the desire was gone. He walks away with much of his health intact with plenty of opportunities before him. A lot of players aren’t as fortunate as Patten to leave on his own terms and without an injury that will affect his quality of life.

Schatz was high on Jermaine Cunningham. I hope The Schatz is right. Cunningham is a big question mark to me, as he wasn’t rated as high as other DE/LB players in the draft. Jermaine has a realistic shot to start this season if he can beat out veterans Derrick Burgess and Rob Ninkovich as well as hold off a healthy Crable.

Most of the rookies might already be in attendance, but training camp doesn't officially begin until the veterans show up on Thursday. In anticipation, I spoke with FootballOutsiders.com creator Aaron Schatz and got his take on what to look for during camp:

he punting job.

Of the early picks, the only guy I don’t know what to expect from is Jermaine Cunningham. Even though the former University of Florida defensive end is practicing with the first team defense during OTAs, it’s not a guarantee that he will stay there when the season starts. Making the switch from 4-3 DE to a 3-4 OLB doesn’t happen overnight.

play until a younger player is ready to become a starter (the competition is likely between rookie Jermaine Cunningham, Shawn Crable or Rob Ninkovich). If everything works according to plans, that’s one to two years, tops. Either Merriman or Burgess can be a bridge player. The difference is Burgess will do it for a lot less and without sacrificing a valuable future draft pick.

If there’s a disappointment it is that they selected only one potential edge rusher in Jermaine Cunningham. The question surrounding Cunningham is whether he is a great player or just part of a great defense. He was selected more for his all-around skills, not just for rushing the passer, as skill that might need a little more developing.

23 April 2010

Now I have another lengthy something-something-ski name to teach myself.

OLB Jermaine Cunningham, Florida – This came from out of nowhere, as I heard his name maybe once or twice before Friday. My concern is Cunningham is another Gator defensive end. That last one New England drafted, Jeremy Mincey in 2006, didn’t work out well and was cut before the season. Hopefully history doesn’t repeat.
