Besides the growing losses in the secondary (CB Jason Webster was added to injured reserve Tuesday), Thomas likely broke his forearm and his return this season is in question. Crable was placed on injured reserve without ever playing a defensive down. And Woods injured his jaw in the loss to the Steelers, putting his playing status up in the air.

Just this off-season alone, we saw CBs Jason Webster and Fernando Bryant fail to make the team. Not too far back safety Matt "personal foul" Stevens failed to stick with the team. The worst experiment was Duane Starks, though he was so bad he deserves to be in a different category.

With that understanding, CB Jason Webster was sent packing so Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite can get their shot. But at the same time, talent trumps potential. That's why RB/FB Kyle Eckel's days with the Pats are over. You don't keep a fringe player over a former 1,000-yard runner with soft hands.

New England signed Jason Webster from Buffalo and the Bills have a good track history of developing corners.

I wonder if those guys feel the same way about LB Victor Hobson, SS Tank Williams, or TE Marcus Pollard.

second round pick Terrence Wheatley, second year Mike Richardson, and free agents Fernando Bryant, Jason Webster, and Lewis Sanders.

Is it really as simple as plugging in the holes? It's very possible that Ellis Hobbs gets switched over from RCB to LCB. The left corner typically covers the opponent's primary receiver, the toughest assignment. I can't imagine that head coach Bill Belichick would start a rookie right out of training camp on the most dangerous receiver.
