Fernando Bryant

Think back to the preseason finale when free agent CB Fernando Bryant was bulldozed by New York Giants TE Darcy Johnson for several yards before crossing the goal line. Even though Bryant start

Just this off-season alone, we saw CBs Jason Webster and Fernando Bryant fail to make the team. Not too far back safety Matt "personal foul" Stevens failed to stick with the team. The worst experiment was Duane Starks, though he was so bad he deserves to be in a different category.

And free agents Fernando Bryant and Lewis Sanders are crafty veterans that lack elite credentials, but can get the job done. The Pats haven't given up on Mike Richardson either. Maybe Ty Law is on head coach Bill Belichick's speed dial.

t was nearly unblockable in the fourth quarter when he got a sack and batted a pass.

Cornerbacks: Fernando Bryant and Terrence Wheatley did nothing to distinguish themselves. Bryant was particularly disappointing. The good news is he didn't get beat deep, but he frequently allowed completions in front of him. But the biggest disappointment is safety Tank Williams being placed on injured reserve for the year. I was expecting big things from him this year and beyond. I'm sure the Patriots were thinking the same way. This injury would benefit a player on the bubble. It gives someone like Lewis Sanders (two passes defensed) a better chance of making the team.

The three front-runners are Fernando Bryant, Terrence Wheatley, and Jonathan Wilhite, but I'll look for Mike Richardson. He looked promising during last year's preseason. I want to see if he gets in the mix as well.

league with 31 other teams because they equated the three free agent corners as scrubs.

Say what? Fernando Bryant a scrub? He wasn't one when he signed with Detroit as a free agent. New England signed Jason Webster from Buffalo and the Bills have a good track history of developing corners.

The only name absent from last year's offense is Nick Kaczur. I'm having doubts about whether he will remain with the team. It's not just about his off-field issue, though that does play a role. More than anything else, it's his ability to pass protect. I believe Kaczur has problems with speed rushers. Besides New York Giants' defensive end Michael Strahan beating Kaczur for two sacks in Super Bowl 42, I remember Baltimore used special teams LB Antwan Barnes to rush the passer and he beat Kaczur for a sack. The recent signing of Anthony Clement doesn't bode well for Kaczur.

between Wilhite, second round pick Terrence Wheatley, second year Mike Richardson, and free agents Fernando Bryant, Jason Webster, and Lewis Sanders.

Is it really as simple as plugging in the holes? It's very possible that Ellis Hobbs gets switched over from RCB to LCB. The left corner typically covers the opponent's primary receiver, the toughest assignment. I can't imagine that head coach Bill Belichick would start a rookie right out of training camp on the most dangerous receiver.

The latest addition to the secondary is Fernando Bryant, a former first round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars and most recently from the Detroit Lions.

He joins Jason Webster and Lewis Sanders hoping to become the replacement for Asante Samuel, who left for greener pastures in Philadelphia.
