Currently on the roster there are Jerod Mayo, Gary Guyton and Eric Alexander as known inside linebackers. In years past, a rotation of three ILBs was good enough to get through the season. If this is the rotation for the Patriots, they are in trouble. Based on preseason play, Alexander has shown he can’t get the job done.

If there is a player currently on the roster that could step in for Izzo, Eric Alexander might be him.
Alexander is entering his 5th season with the Patriots and has been almost exclusively a special teamer. The linebacker may never become a regular on defense, but his size (6-2 240) and athleticism is a good fit in coverage. With the new rules in place, Alexander’s speed would be a nice fit New England’s adjusted kick coverage.

That leaves Eric Alexander, Tedy Bruschi, Tully Banta-Cain, Vinny Ciurciu, Shawn Crable, Gary Guyton, Jerod Mayo, Pierre Woods, Vince Redd, Paris Lenon, and Adalius Thomas as the roster LBs (rookie Tyrone McKenzie is on injured reserve for the year).
