Drew Bledsoe

to congratulate the newest members of the Patriots Hall of Fame, center Jon Morris and quarterback Drew Bledsoe. They were inducted on Saturday, with Bledsoe delivering the best line. To paraphrase, Bledsoe called QB Tom Brady a terrible back-up because Brady didn’t understand what it meant to be a back-up. Pictured below is Morris being hugged by Patriots owner Robert Kraft:

But that’s exactly what happened to QB Drew Bledsoe in 2001. A sheared blood vessel in his chest sidelined Bledsoe for nine weeks. When he was ready to come back, head coach Bill Belichick rode Tom Brady’s hot hand and benched Bledsoe. There wasn’t even an open competition for the job.

It’s week 11, a home game against the Minnesota Vikings. QB Drew Bledsoe’s coming out party. After falling behind 20-0, Bledsoe rallied the Pats in the second half to tie the game at 20 before leading an overtime drive that ended with a 14-yard game-winning touchdown.

For instance, QB Drew Bledsoe, once the keeper of the Patriots’ significant passing stats, becomes eligible next year. WR Troy Brown could get in as soon as 2012. Fan favorite LB Tedy Bruschi might walk in as soon as 2014.

20 December 2009

It was first introduced when the Patriots played against Drew Bledsoe in 2002. Years later it was used against QB Tom Brady. I think it was the New York Jets when coached by Eric Mangini that turned the tables. That’s good company to be in for Fitzpatrick.

QB Tom Brady continues to set new team records. He passed Drew Bledsoe in career completions and tied the franchise record with his seventh 3,000-yard season.

6. It wasn’t all good. The blocked punt was the first blocked punt by the Jets since 1986, a span of 371 games.

he had “11.”

I couldn’t help but think, “11? Come on, that’s Drew Bledsoe’s number that should be retired!”

So Bledsoe’s retirement won’t happen this year, but it should happen sometime down the road. But the decision to pass Bledsoe’s number to another player instead of holding it vacant until the team honors the franchise leader in passing yards and winner of two AFC Championships irks me a little.

eted a 50-touchdown season for goodness sake! This isn't like when head coach Bill Belichick traded Drew Bledsoe to clear the path for Brady. Tom clearly out-played Bledsoe. I don't have any doubts in my mind that if Brady wasn't hurt against Kansas City the Patriots would have a better record than today's 7-4. It's possible the Patriots would be undefeated with a healthy Brady.

15 November 2008

It was exactly 14 years ago Thursday that Drew Bledsoe had his coming out party. With the team down by 20 to the Minnesota Vikings, Bledsoe was given the keys to the car in the second half and he put the pedal to the metal. Drew shifted the offense into no-huddle overdrive and tied the game 20-20. In overtime, the Patriots got the ball first and never gave the Vikings' offense a chance. Bledsoe directed the winning drive, culminating in a beautiful play-action touchdown pass to fullback Kevin Turner.

Think back to when QB Drew Bledsoe was knocked out of the starting lineup in 2001. QB Tom Brady came in, won his first game, then was spanked by the Dolphins. In that regard, QB Matt Cassel's career is mirroring Brady's first two starts.

Bring in Drew Bledsoe!" That was a good memory because the Patriots still beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship and Brady returned to play in Super Bowl XXXVI.

It's not the same script this week as it looks like Brady won't be back next week, in two weeks, or this year. Granted, the team hasn't said it yet. That comes just before noon. But I just want the Patriots to hurry up and get it over with.

With the first pick overall, Parcells drafted quarterback Drew Bledsoe. The only move I didn't like was the new uniforms and logo.

I hated the new look but the 5-11 season gave me optimism. In early 1994, Orthwein sold the team to Kraft. Finally I had peace of mind.

toughest quarterbacks I've been fortunate to watch his whole career that's not named Brett Favre or Drew Bledsoe.

Steve McNair was a warrior. He played through pains we will never know about. And through it all, he carried the Tennessee Oilers/Titans when he was on the field. Before New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning made a unbelieveable escape in Super Bowl XLII, McNair broke away from the grasp of two St. Louis Rams defenders as part of one of the most memorable drives in Super Bowl history. Of course McNair's final slant pass was one yard short, but he willed the Titans to the brink of victory thanks to that great escape.
