Cleveland Browns

Now is the time to start praying the Cleveland Browns pull off an improbable upset in week 12. 

If Denver continues to spiral out of control, that clears the path for New England. With games remaining against the Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Miami Dolphins, the Patriots must sweep and hope the Bengals lose to the Browns. If New England forces the tie, there’s still a chance for a playoff bye week as the tie-breaker goes down to common opponents (Baltimore, Houston, Denver, New York Jets ; N.E. 1-2 with Houston still to play, Cincinnati 2-2 with Jets remaining) followed by strength of victory (Cincinnati .508 New England .389) and strength of schedule.

As OTA's and minicamps progress while training camp begin to roll over the horizon, America's favorite sport nears its regular season.  While nobody knows how well teams will do in a season with the randomness of injuries and several other factors, it's always interesting to look ahead at the schedule and prognosticate.  Unlike most people, I'm not going to give just a win or loss for each game, rather I'm going to predict how many times the Steelers would win if they played a team 10 times.  For instance if the Steelers were playing a very crappy team, I would say 9/10 or 10/10.  At the end i will add up the wins and divide by 10, giving us how many wins they will have this season.

As the draft approaches, it's obvious that the Patriots need an outside linebacker that can effectively rush the quarterback and maybe another cornerback to add to the competition between Ellis Hobbs, Jonathan Wilhite, and Terrence Wheatley. Finding the kind of LB that would fit in New England will be tougher this year.

Boy, we don't even get a chance to let the fact that the Patriots are out of the playoffs for the first time since 2002 soak in before the team is involved in off-season news.

On Monday, three teams fired their head coaches, with two of the head men out of work have Patriots ties. Rod Marinelli was canned after a 0-16 season with Detroit, snitch Eric Mangini was let go by the Jets for missing the playoffs two out of three years, and Cleveland had enough of Romeo Crennel after 40 losses in four seasons. Crennel and Mangini were both former defensive coordinators for the Patriots.

From Week 12 to Week 15 the Houston Texans showed great poise and determination. They started a 4-game winning streak in Cleveland in a defensive battle. Not overly impressive, but a win is a win in the National Football League. The team then dominated a displaced looking Jacksonville Jaguars team at home in the first Monday Night game in franchise history.

     What I am about to say here may sounds strange, or maybe not, but think about this solution to our BCS predicament.  This could clarify and validate the BCS selections, the National Title Game, provide some great excitement, set a precedent for that kind of excitement, and get the ball rolling toward a college football playoff.

1) Houston Texans @ Cleveland Browns

Two disappointments this season go at it here. The Houston Texans who have had quarterback troubles all season with Matt Schaub going down in Minnesota a few weeks backs to bad decision making by back-up Sage Rosenfels. There's a lot wrong with this team. You can't point a finger on just one thing, there's multiple holes in the Texans offense/defense. The Browns have had similar problems. Quarterback Brady Quinn is slated to start despite suffering a broken finger in Monday Night's game at Buffalo. Both teams (Texans 8-8, Browns 10-6 last season) were expected to reach if not exceed last season's record, etc. Onto the actual game between the two: I see the game being relatively close, but the Texans just don't play well on the road and when they do play well...they don't usually finish. I see the Browns winning a 'squeaker'.

Week six is nearly in the books, and the Black and Gold look more black and blue. The scheduling gods finally got one right, and Pittsburgh gets its bye week at the best possible time. After going through a meat grinder against Jacksonville and Baltimore, the Steelers needed this week to heal up, with the running back and D-line positions being hardest hit. Willie Parker looks set to return, which will take some of the load off of Big Ben. He’s partnered up with Najeh Davenport, who made his return last week after first round draft pick Rashard Mendenhall was lost for the season.

On the other side of the city is Progressive Field (formerly Jacobs Field. Damn naming rights. Since Progressive bought the right to name the stadium, why not go with Progressive Park?), home of the Indians, and the Quicken Loans Arena, where the Cavaliers play (the logo is in the background to the left).

There is a lot of debate surrounding the Cleveland Browns and their No.3 selection in next month's NFL Draft.

Should they solidify their offensive line and select Wisconsin left tackle Joe Thomas? Might the team give up on quarterback Charlie Frye after just two seasons and select LSU standout JaMarcus Russell or Notre Dame's Brady Quinn? Could the Browns bolster their receiving corps by selecting the incredible wideout from Georgia Tech, Calvin Johnson?
