Many people believe the Pats blew it in 2009 when they had the opportunity to take Clay Matthews. Instead New England traded out of the first round and accumulated picks for ’09 and ’10.

I want to see how disruptive OLB Clay Matthews is and if the receivers can get separation against the fine Packers corners. But without Rogers challenging New England’s defense, we’re missing out on half the show.

The Patriots could had drafted such a player in 2009 – USC OLB/DE Clay Matthews. I didn’t want him because I was wary of the hybrid Trojan with few sacks. I thought he could be a good 4-3 linebacker, but had doubts he could be a good 3-4 linebacker.

OLB Clay Matthews. DE Larry English. CB Alphonso Smith. Just a few of the names projected as players the New England Patriots would draft with the 23rd overall pick. Instead the Pats traded out of the first round, stockpiled more picks, and used all four second round picks.

4. Clay Matthews OLB (USC): Matthews also has some experience playing in space as an OLB at USC. He would also be a Special Teams demon who would contribute immediately. The Pats have a stable of young OLBs, whether Sintim or Matthews are better than any of them remains to be seen.
