Chris Baker

And Alge Crumpler replaced Chris Baker as the blocking TE.

The difference with Crumpler and Gronkowski is obvious as they are better blockers than the players they replaced (Ben Watson left for Cleveland as a free agent). Hernandez is the wild card as he’s an athletic mismatch for linebackers with his quickness. Hernandez in the slot typically draws an additional defensive back.

The Pats are starting all over at the position after releasing Chris Baker (signed with Seattle) and letting Ben Watson (Cleveland) leave as a free agent. N

like a cornerback with 4.2 speed, watch me quickly make up lost ground:

At some point, TE Chris Baker signed with Seattle. I completely missed it. But his replacement, Alge Crumpler, already signed on the dotted line. Best of luck, Baker. Now the Pats need a receiving TE.

th receiving skills well beyond the average blocking tight end.

Crumpler takes the role of Chris Baker last year. Crumpler is a better receiver than Baker, but he won’t get many opportunities to catch passes if Baker’s 14 receptions last year is a reliable predictor.

With TE Chris Baker catching a pass during the opening drive, it foreshadowed his first touchdown since week three against Atlanta.

3. As well as RB Laurence Maroney has improved after the bye week, there’s a serious problem. He fumbled for the fourth time this year, the second fumble inside the five yard line. After the fumble, Maroney didn’t get another carry. Those carries went to Sammy Morris, who almost became the third running back to run for 100 yards this year with 95 on Sunday.

Of the new arrivals, only TE Chris Baker caught any of Tom Brady’s 39 passes.

Feeling His Way: It took him a while, but Brady found his rhythm in the second half. After completing 59 percent of his passes in the first half, Brady raised his game to 84 percent for 219 yards and two scores. His confidence in his knee will grow as the season progresses.

But at this point, who the two tight ends will be is still up in the air. Chris Baker seems likely to make the team. Ben Watson, last year’s top player at the position, hasn’t taken a snap this preseason, putting him behind Thomas and Alex Smith.

t’s why two veterans were added to the roster to challenge the holdovers.

Free agent Chris Baker was signed from the New York Jets after N.Y. deemed Baker expendable after Dustin Keller impressed the coaching staff in his rookie year in 2008. And Alex Smith wasn’t wanted by Tampa Bay anymore after they traded with Cleveland for Kellen Winslow Jr. The Pats got Smith for an undisclosed draft pick.

If the receivers can’t get open, Brady might be able to count on the new tight ends. Chris Baker was added as a free agent from the rival New York Jets, and Alex Smith became expendable in Tampa Bay after the Buccaneers traded for Kellen Winslow. Smith was acquired via trade after the draft.

RB Fred Taylor should be an upgrade over Jordan, and TE Chris Baker is a reliable target that should fit in well in the offense.

What's next for the team? They apparently talked with former Detroit Lion WR Mike Furrey. He would be an ideal fit as a third wide out. Also brought in have been CB Chris Carr and QB Patrick Ramsey. And with a gaping hole at OLB, there's a rumor that DE/OLB Jason Taylor, recently released by Washington, is generating interest from the Pats.

They signed RB Fred Taylor and TE Chris Baker, two vets that can make a contribution immediately. This isn't good for the likes of RBs LaMont Jordan or Laurence Maroney and TE David Thomas.
