Does anybody remember preseason predictions? All those TV personalities and media experts always make it a point to pick which team will win the Super Bowl before the first kickoff.
Preseason predictions are completely illogical. Scoring the best free agents and having a NFL Draft rated highly by draftniks has nothing to do with on-field performance. And injuries can turn a team’s fortunes in an instant.

I have a lot of expectations for this year’s rookie class. First round pick Devin McCourty will get a lot of run, maybe as high as the third corner. The two tight ends will contribute almost immediately. Brandon Spikes will become a two-down run-stuffing ILB. Zoltan Mesko will win the punting job.

Free agency starts in about three weeks, but teams have been waiting more than a month for the shopping season to commence. I don’t know the complete list of free agents available, though already there are a few high profile names out there. But which of these players fit New England?

OLB Clay Matthews. DE Larry English. CB Alphonso Smith. Just a few of the names projected as players the New England Patriots would draft with the 23rd overall pick. Instead the Pats traded out of the first round, stockpiled more picks, and used all four second round picks.

As OTA's and minicamps progress while training camp begin to roll over the horizon, America's favorite sport nears its regular season. While nobody knows how well teams will do in a season with the randomness of injuries and several other factors, it's always interesting to look ahead at the schedule and prognosticate. Unlike most people, I'm not going to give just a win or loss for each game, rather I'm going to predict how many times the Steelers would win if they played a team 10 times. For instance if the Steelers were playing a very crappy team, I would say 9/10 or 10/10. At the end i will add up the wins and divide by 10, giving us how many wins they will have this season.

In the world of journalism, it's the greatest compliment when an article you wrote inspires others to express their own opinion on the same subject.
Back in February, I wrote an article asking the question should teams draft tight ends in the first round. It was a relevant question because Oklahoma State's Brandon Pettigrew could be the only TE selected within the first 32 picks.

Well fans another Bears season has come to an end with no postseason play. Although The season wasn't a total loss, there are some issues that need to be resolved. However it is now time to prepare for the monotonous routine of off-season chaos. The owner's meetings start next month, followed by the rookie combine, and then the draft is right around the corner. plus we must not forget the free agency calamity that ultimately finds out who has the deepest pockets.

Not that there aren't any AFC teams that Cassel would be a good fit for, but I wouldn't trade him to direct competition. One rumor had Cassel being pursued by the New York Jets if Brett Favre retires. The Jets are a playoff ready team that doesn't have the patience for the unproven Kellen Clemens and his growing pains.

About a couple of weeks ago, I was talking with a co-worker about the current state of the Patriots. He suggested that maybe the team would be better off tanking for better draft position as opposed to trying to get into the playoffs because they'd probably get bounced out early.

Coming into Sunday night's nationally televised contest against the Bears, the Vikes were a team (and a fan base) that expected a victory. Remarkably (if you know anything about the Vikes in pressure situations!), that is exactly what transpired, with an exclamation mark! Why did the Vikings have no excuse not to win this game? When the 2008 NFL schedule came out in April and Tom Brady still his left ACL intact, the thought of the Patriots going 16-0 for a second consecutive season did not seem out of the question.
On paper, the Pats had the easiest schedule in the NFL. Which seemed like a cruel joke after the way they laid waste to their 2007 opponents.

Eleven weeks into the 2008 NFL season, the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings all sit atop the NFC North division with identical 5-5 records. Before I preview this Sunday's Vikings-Bears matchup this Sunday, there is one more area of the Vikings I would like to discuss...their pass defense.
For a short history lesson, the Vikings have had a porous pass defense for a good many years. Even in the 1998-2000 years, when the offense was racking up the points and wins, the defense would almost certainly give up 250 yards through the air and a few scores. Things only got worse during the Mike Tice era, when the "McCombs Administration" would not spend a time on the defense. As Brad Childress put together such talent as Pat Williams, Antoine Winfield, Darren Sharper, and Dwight Smith (until the whole sex-in-the-stairwell thing), the overall defense seemed to improve, but teams (starting with the New England Patriots on a fateful Monday night in 2006) began to realizing that all you had to do to beat the Vikings was pass, pass, and then pass a little more.

Well what can we say after that wonderful gift we delivered to the city of Chicago. I felt sick for about three hours after the game, I didn’t want to be talked to or even wanted anything to do with stats and sports of any kind. After the Dallas game I knew we let one get away. After last night it became infuriating and now I just want Sunday to come so we can really find out what kind of team we have.

BLAST WEDNESDAYS
Hello NFL fans,
Well I am going to start up something new for all those NFL fans who have a lot to say but can’t get it out, enough. I have a lot of people writing, calling and just talking to me about the things that irk them about the NFL to include players, coaches, mascots, ticket prizes, play calls, cheerleaders…yes even that. I recently decided why not make a weekly manuscript about the things that hurt the fans, I know many legions of people out there are upset about their teams in some way shape or form. This is how we are going to do it every Wednesday, since it is the most boring day of the football week. Mondays and Sundays are game days. Tuesdays are layovers from the previous games and we seem to have nothing available in the middle of the week, until Friday when you get into college football mode.

What better way to start my life as a sports blogger than this. It is my opening post, yet more importantly to the sports fan it is Pro Football Eve!!! That's right. Football is back and the 5 month holiday is "The Most wonderful Time of the Year", but only some of us will get presents. Santa Coughlin may be in the giving mood again. It is more likely however, that Giselle will lead the Patriot fans in a Marilyn Monroe inspired "Santa Bra-dy", asking for that "one thing, a ring".

Over the weekend former Patriots owner James Orthwein died. The Red Sox got a scare as Hall of Fame outfield Carl Yastremski went to the hospital with chest pains and underwent triple bypass surgery.

It isn't a surprise that the Patriots signed veteran running back LaMont Jordan. During the off-season they brought Kevin Jones to Foxborough for an interview and likely a physical as they wanted to gauge his recovery from off-season surgery. Ultimately New England passed on Jones and he signed with Chicago. A few weeks later, the Pats sign Jordan.

After seven rounds and 252 picks, one thing stands out. 41 defensive linemen were drafted and 39 offensive linemen were granted employment.
Did someone say monkey see, monkey do? They always said the NFL is a copycat league and it couldn't be more obvious.

There is a lot of debate surrounding the Cleveland Browns and their No.3 selection in next month's NFL Draft.
Should they solidify their offensive line and select Wisconsin left tackle Joe Thomas? Might the team give up on quarterback Charlie Frye after just two seasons and select LSU standout JaMarcus Russell or Notre Dame's Brady Quinn? Could the Browns bolster their receiving corps by selecting the incredible wideout from Georgia Tech, Calvin Johnson?
