KR/PR Brandon Tate, Cincinnati Bengals – He didn’t stand out in preseason with New England but has done fine with Cincy. Tate is averaging 24.2 per kickoff return and 10.6 on punt returns, a yard behind the Pats on punt returns but almost three yards better on kickoff returns.

And then there’s Brandon Tate. His chances of sticking with the team got a lot tougher with the NFL moving kickoffs to the 35-yard line. Tate is an explosive kickoff returner, but with fewer returns expected, Tate has to convince the coaches he can be a deep threat off the bench. Julian Edelman might be close to taking over all return duties.

Head coach Bill Belichick has his connections. Belichick relies on his network of college coaches to give him honest evaluations of players that fit the Patriots’ system.
And it’s hard to argue with the results. Using this reliable inside information, New England effectively mined great players from well respected programs in Miami, Florida, Boston College, and Alabama.

For receivers Brandon Tate and Taylor Price, they gotta bury their noses into the playbook from now until mini camp. Tate played his first full season while Price was adjusting from a run-first offense at the University of Ohio to New England’s wide open passing offense.

A Good Stretch: Receivers Brandon Tate and Taylor Price are said to have deep speed. Please, Hoyer, go over the top and see if they can go get it.
Wake Up: Double or triple team OLB Cameron Wake. A division rival would love to ruin our post season prospects with a good lick on QB Tom Brady.

Who will be the deep threat now that WR Randy Moss is gone? Brandon Tate.
Why not Tate? He was the talk of training camp as teammates couldn’t help but gush about the fourth round pick out of the 2009 Draft. He came with a reputation as an explosive player that finished his North Carolina career as the NCAA career leader in kickoff and punt returns.

Wish I Was Special: Josh Cribbs earned a reputation as a dangerous punt returner. Brandon Tate is making a name as a kickoff returner. Either player can tilt the field with a big return.

With the picks New England got for trading down, they took CB Darius Butler and WRs Brandon Tate and Julian Edelman in the 2009 Draft. A year later they used one of the Green Bay picks with a sixth round pick to move up and select TE Rob Gronkowski.

A few things I’m looking for:
Spread Offense: WRs Julian Edelman and Brandon Tate and TE Rob Gronkowski each had one catch last week. They need to be involved to develop a role on the team.

And this year’s class of rookies could be as good, if not better. CB Devin McCourty and LB Brandon Spikes could be starters. TEs Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez likely will surpass the contribution of the duo they are replacing, Benjamin Watson and Chris Baker. Zoltan Mesko is the new punter. And DL Brandon Deaderick made the active roster as a seventh round selection.

3. My favorite rookie wasn’t ILB Brandon Spikes, but P Zoltan Mesko. Three punts landed inside the 20 and the Saints gained just one punt return yard on two attempts. Mesko will tilt the field during the season if he keeps this up.

And with three talented tight ends on the roster, the Patriots might sacrifice a wide out to keep veteran Alge Crumpler and rookie Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

We’ve heard nothing but good things about Tate, who was a star receiver at North Carolina before tearing up his knee. If he’s as good as advertised, then he might be a steal of a third round pick from the 2009 draft.

North Carolina’s Cam Thomas will visit with the Patriots soon. The 6-4 330-pound defensive tackle will be put under the microscope at Gillette Stadium, like Tennessee RB Montario Hardesty, TCU DE Jerry Hughes, and Tenneessee DT Dan Williams will be. Like dinner with Tebow, these visits could mean something, or could mean nothing.

1: Welcome to the NFL, Brandon Tate. The rookie receiver was activated from the non-football injury/reserved list and no time was wasted getting him into the game. Two kickoff returns for 44 isn’t much, but his success is just getting back on the field after tearing his ACL.

The Patriots took a chance with WR Brandon Tate when they drafted him in the third round. He suffered an ACL and MCL tear that cut short his senior season at North Carolina and hurt his draft status.

All these players are available to return whenever the team determines the individual is ready to play. In fact, Richard was removed from the PUP list today and participated in his first camp practice.

I wouldn’t rule out WR Brandon Tate from returning either. The third round draft pick from North Carolina suffered a serious knee injury while returning a punt for the Tar Heels. If he’s fully recovered, Tate could be right in the mix of the return competition.

We’ll find out how much blame belonged to Hobbs when the season starts because nothing has been done to improve the pass rush this off-season so far. But for sure Ellis was part of the problem.

Brandon Tate: Tate and Percy Harvin were the only two morons to test positive for pot at the combine. I'm pretty sure 70% of the NFL smokes weed so I don't really see what the big deal is. I think Randy Moss and Wes Welker will show young Brandon what it takes to succeed in the NFL and either he'll get it or he won't. It's not like Chad Jackson left any big shoes behind to be filled.
