I’m not interested. 

DE/LB Brandon Graham, Michigan

 

One of many hybrid players New England checked out. I wasn’t sure about Graham, but now I’m a believer. But I really doubt that the Pats would take him in the first round. New England like their OLBs big (around 6’5” 250 pounds) and I have a hard time believing the Patriots would relax those standards on a first round pick.

Surely players like Jerry Hughes and Brandon Graham would grade out as DPRs at least as rookies. Is 22nd overall too high for a DPR?

So the conservative, common sense pick would be a Sergio Kindle, Carlos Dunlap, Brandon Graham, or Jerry Hughes. None are perfect for the Patriots OLB position, but all could potentially provide some pass rush that the Pats sorely need.

k Burgess as a pass rush specialist? 

Looking to the draft, I expect both Sergio Kindle and Brandon Graham by the time the Pats select at 22. I’ve seen one mock draft saying the Pats select Clemson DE Ricky Sapp. Based on one video I’ve seen of him, I hope not. I hold defenders from Clemson in high regards, but that one reel I saw made Sapp look like a player playing in space and doing nothing. I’ll look for more on him, but if nothing changes my mind, I can see the Patriots selecting Florida DE Carlos Dunlap and going for an OLB-type in the second round and/or later.

A prospect like Brandon Graham from Michigan might be a little shorter than Bill Belichick likes his OLBs, but by simply replacing Derrick Burgess with a player like Graham you could be looking at an instant upgrade at reduced cost.
