The Patriots haven’t lost to the New York Jets in the playoffs. I did not know that. N.E. is 2-0 thanks to a 26-14 win back in 1985 and a 37-16 blasting in 2007. Naturally these results have no bearing on what happens on Sunday, but I find these facts interesting.
The weekend slate of Divisional games is very intriguing because all teams played each other earlier in the season. Like the Pats-Jets game, Pittsburgh-Baltimore reunites divisional teams that split the season series.
The opponents aren’t as familiar in the NFC, but the teams did cross paths in the regular season. Atlanta hosted Green Bay once before, as the Falcons held off the Packers, 20-17. Seattle played the rude guests as they knocked off Chicago, 23-20.
Familiarity fosters animosity so expect the intensity of these games to be almost overwhelming.
The Patriots have reason to come into this game confident as they stomped the Jets in the last game, 45-3. But regular season success doesn’t guarantee results in the playoffs.
There was a time we pretty much thought the Pats were invincible when playing a regular season opponent in the playoffs. During the three Super Bowls in four years dynasty period, New England was 5-0 in the playoffs against teams they played in the regular season. Since then they are 2-4, and right now have a two-game losing streak at the hands of the New York Giants in 2008 and Baltimore in ’09.
That’s something to think about when looking at the remaining teams in the playoffs. New England played and beat all but one team in the Divisionals. Besides the Jets win, the Patriots defeated Baltimore 23-20, Pittsburgh 39-26, and Green Bay 31-27. Only Atlanta wasn’t a regular season victim, though the Pats beat them in the preseason, 28-10.
Playing these teams at least once before isn’t an advantage or disadvantage. It’s no guarantee that the playoff winning streak continues against the Jets or New England’s losing streak will be extended a third game.
So what the Patriots beat these teams once before? New England has to do it when it really matters. That starts Sunday afternoon.
A few things I’m looking for:
A Thin Line: DLs Ron Brace and Mike Wright are on IR and Myron Pryor is doubtful. Jets will be without RT Damien Woody. The reinforcements have to step up big time.
Crow More, Tony: CB Antonio Cromartie called QB Tom Brady an “A-hole” and said “F*** him.” Cromartie has to back up the tough talk.
Third Time Uncharmed: New England finished last in defensive third down percentage. Somehow they have to get stops and get off the field.
The home team won the regular season games. Playing in their own house won’t be the difference for New England, but the Patriots will be fueled by the home crowd and advance to the AFC Championship.
