Hours Before Kickoff: Week 3

This is why the Patriots got them for, right?

Shortly after the Patriots signed veteran CBs Leigh Bodden (6’1”) and Shawn Springs (6’0”), I couldn’t help but notice their size and how they didn’t fit the profile of the typical Pats corner. So I did some research.

My conclusion led me to believe the signings were tactical moves because New England will see a lot of length at receiver this season that would be difficult for Terrence Wheatley (5’9”) and Jonathan Wilhite (5’11”) to handle.

Springs and Bodden are regular contributors to the defense, but today we see exactly their value to the team as they must cover a tall and athletic group of Atlanta receivers.

Roddy White (6’0”) is the main target with Michael Jenkins (6’4”) on the other side of the field. Brian Finneran (6’5”) might not see as much action, but is a proven play-maker and red zone threat.

The corners will have their work cut out for them. They might not be able to stand face to face with their adversaries, but if Springs and Bodden can cut them down to size with physical play, it levels the playing field.

A few things I’m looking for:

Tony the Tiger: Actually, Tony Gonzalez is a Falcon. But if New England’s problems covering tight ends persist, Gonzalez will tear the Patriots secondary to shreds.

Grounded: Heavy rains are in the forecast, putting greater emphasis on the ability to run the ball.

Need a Bruschi: If only Tedy could come out of retirement for one game. The Falcons have DE Kroy Biermann, meaning Atlanta has the best beer-related last name.

It’s possible that both WRs Wes Welker and Randy Moss won’t be available for today’s game. If they are held out, which is very possible considering the weather conditions, the Patriots won’t come out on top.
