For anyone who wants the Patriots to sign a veteran quarterback to be the back-up, the best free agent out there is out of the game. On Thursday, Daunte Culpepper decided to retire from the NFL after just nine years in the league.
His decision has me scratching my head somewhat. For someone as prolific as he was in his heyday, to see he's out of the league after just nine years when a lot of less accomplished passers had 15-year careers is puzzling. I do believe Culpepper's stubborn search for a starting job played a role.
But if he's out of the league, he's out of the league. Don't reach for Daunte like New England did for Vinny Testaverde. Don't coax Culpepper out of retirement like they did for LB Junior Seau. It would be nice reuniting Culpepper with WR Randy Moss, but it won't happen. Find an active vet if the Pats desire more experience behind Tom Brady.
Talking about Brady, at this point no one knows for sure if he's healthy or not. The latest rumor is Brady has a broken foot. But on the injury report, for the first time since forever, Brady is not on the injury report. Not even his chronic bum shoulder is mentioned. He's been touched by a healer! It's a miracle!
Usually the truth is somewhere between the two extremes. Brady's not completely healthy, but the foot isn't broken. Without question it will not keep Brady from playing, but will it effect his play? This is a guy that played through a sports hernia. He can play through a sore foot. Brady will be fine for Sunday.
