Less Competition, More Intensity

Tuesday was cut down day and I expected more veterans to to turn in their playbook than young players. The reason being that veterans have reached their full potential while the sky is the limit for players with three or less years under their belt.

With that understanding, CB Jason Webster was sent packing so Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite can get their shot. But at the same time, talent trumps potential. That's why RB/FB Kyle Eckel's days with the Pats are over. You don't keep a fringe player over a former 1,000-yard runner with soft hands.

Once RB LaMont Jordan signed on, I knew Eckel would be the odd man out. While Eckel was a good story, Jordan is a great player. How often does a ball carrier of Jordan's caliber is found abandoned on the side of the road? This is a veteran the Patriots can count on in games, not just at practice with the scout team.

Scout team or practice squad was OL Ryan Wendell's future, so good-bye to another fringe guy. Maybe we see him again somewhere down the road.

But cuts weren't the only moves to get the roster down to 75. G Stephen Neal was placed on the physically unable to perform. T Ryan O'Callaghan has a worse fate, sent to injured reserve and ending his 2008 season before it started.

Considering the disappointing performance of the offensive line, losing a starter for at least six weeks and an experienced reserve with starting experience for the year has me a little worried. The right side of the line takes a hit without these two since O'Callaghan played well in place of RT Nick Kaczur and Neal did a admirable job. Keep in mind that's the weaker side and now will be the target of opposing defenses as G Billy Yates must face the challenge.

For those still on the roster, You have a few last chances to either make the 53-man roster or give the coaches a reason believe in your potential for the eight player practice squad. To make the team, you'll have to beat out a teammate.

For all of his talent, WR Chad Jackson is yet to break out. He played well against Philadelphia, catching two passes and a beautiful jump ball TD in the back right corner. But he can't feel comfortable when on the other side of the field C.J. Jones finished with three receptions for 70 yards and a touch. Even safety/receiver/gofer/beerguy/laundry attendant Ray Ventrone caught four for 49 yards.

The competition at linebacker should be interesting. I thought Eric Alexander had his best game against the Eagles. he and Victor Hobson will help each other playing together while likely competing for the same roster spot. It's possible Shawn Crable could make Pierre Woods expendable.

Others hope to hold on: LBs Bo Ruud, Gary Guyton, Vince Redd, and RB BenJarvis Green-Ellis (man I love that name) might only have a chance at the practice squad. But they have to start somewhere.
