I was listening to talk radio the other day as they argued about the corner back situation for the Pats. Apparently they don't know that the Patriots play in the a league with 31 other teams because they equated the three free agent corners as scrubs.
Say what? Fernando Bryant a scrub? He wasn't one when he signed with Detroit as a free agent. New England signed Jason Webster from Buffalo and the Bills have a good track history of developing corners.
I wonder if those guys feel the same way about LB Victor Hobson, SS Tank Williams, or TE Marcus Pollard.
With a team as good as the Pats, they don't shop for clearance free agents. All the free agents have a chance to earn a roster spot and maybe even start. They are not here for the sake of resting veterans. OT Anthony Clement can make Nick Kaczur expendable.
People gotta recognize! Day by day, I'll review a free agent's career up to his arrival to Patriots camp. I'll get started with Bryant, the man many believe will be a starter at corner back:
Bryant was drafted 26th overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars (third corner selected) following a four-year career at the University of Alabama. Bryant was a two-way player, earning a All-SEC second team honors. His senior year Bryant was an All-American with six interceptions, 82 tackles, and 48 receptions.
He started 71 of 72 games for the Jags, including all 16 his rookie year, providing solid coverage in a secondary with safety Donovin Darius and Aaron Beasley.
Bryant was a prized free agent signing by Detroit in 2004 but injuries cost him 24 games. He did start every game he played for the Lions in four years. Last year in 16 starts he tied a career high in interceptions with two and a personal best 13 passes defensed.
The 5-11 184-pound corner back has seven interceptions and 54 passes defensed in his 10-year career.
