Keep the name out your mouth

It's been unavoidable for the past two weeks. Clips of retired Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre going on and on about how he wants to come out of retirement but the Packers won't let him.

I've heard just about enough from Favre because I'm of the thought that if you say you're doing something, like retiring, then stick to it. If in the back of his mind he felt like I still wanna play, then don't hold a tearful press conference saying, "I know I can still play, but I'm tired. I'm just tired."

But Favre is taking his tiff with Packers GM Ted Thompson to the streets and is getting personal now. He's accusing Thompson of having a forked tongue - saying one thing to him, but something else to the public. Favre even spoke about how badly he wanted the Pack to trade for Randy Moss.

Hey, wait a minute! What does Moss have to do with your beef with the Packers? Don't drag his name into this. Leave the Patriots' ultimate weapon out of this.

Favre went on the say he practically begged for the Packers to trade for Moss but they didn't listen. And let me guess: If Favre had Moss on his team then the Packers would be Super Bowl Champions? Please, Favre, you're making me laugh.

Apparently Favre is jealous that Brady and Moss broke records (passing TDs, receiving TDs). I can understand that. But he doesn't see the whole picture. The Packers had a receiving corps with loads of potential.

Donald Driver is a former Pro Bowler. Greg Jennings had a breakout season in his second year. And rookie James Jones proved to be more than just potential as he had a productive first year. Would Moss make the group better? Yes, but the need wasn't as severe as New England's.

The Patriots got to the AFC Championship with Reche Caldwell as the team leader in receptions and yards. the following off-season the Patriots re-made the receiving corps by signing Donte' Stallworth and trading for Wes Welker. The draft-day trade for Moss completed the transformation.

There's also the other part of the trade: The player has to want to go to the new team. All reports at the time had Moss not interested in playing for the Packers. We may never know why, but my guess would be he wanted to join a team with a chance to win a championship (which at the time Green Bay didn't look like one of those teams because of the 8-8 record in '06). That and he might not had been fond of the Green Bay faithful. The panta-moon best captures how he felt about the Packers fans. Brett could beg all he wants for Moss, but if Randy doesn't want to go then that deal won't happen, and it didn't.

Few expected the Packers to get to the NFC Championship. They even had a chance to win the game. But Favre could have 10 Randy Mosses and it wouldn't matter if he irrisponsibly throws an overtime pass right to the opposing cornerback to lose the game.

Favre is listing dirty laundry like he's on Judge Joe Brown. Just stick with your Shakespearian "To play or not to play. That is the question." Leave Moss out of this. It has should have no bearing on whether you return or not.
