Free Willie

Patriots defensive back Willie Andrews was put behind bars for pulling a gun on his fiancee and holding it to her temple. Due to these recent actions, Andrews should be let go.

Not by the authorities, but by the New England team.

The Pats haven't had a stellar off-season. Previous to Andrews, offensive lineman Nick Kaczur was named as a informant after being arrested with oxycontin in New York. Before that, other players had arrests for possession of marijuana. Andrews was one of those players found in possession.

The difference between Andrews and the others is Willie had half a pound of weed and $6,800 in cold cash. I'm no drug dealer, but that evidence makes it look like Andrews had intentions of distributing as opposed to personal use.

This pattern of behavior extends to before his Patriots days. Back in 2002, Andrews was jailed for 30 days in Texas for being caught with a .25-caliber pistol in the trunk of his car while on probation for a criminal mischief conviction.

By now the Patriots should have his fill of Andrews' off the field misbehavior. A reserve defensive back can be easily replaced. New England drafted two corners (Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite) with return ability as well as a receiver (Matt Slater) who has experience playing safety in college. There are also the three free agent corners signed and safety Tank Williams added to the roster. New England will be fine without Andrews.

As for Andrews, we can only hope that he grows up and straightens out. He's blowing a golden opportunity. If he's cut, he might not get a second chance with another team.
