Well I can at least say I got one pick right. Tuesday morning the Miami Dolphins reached an agreement with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long and he is the first pick overall.
So with that out of the way, what happens next? There's a fair amount of trade rumors floating around: Buffalo wants to trade QB J.P. Losman; Kansas City is looking to trade DE Jared Allen to either Minnesota or Tampa Bay; Dallas is still in persuit of Tennessee CB Adam Jones; If Carolina sees QB Matt Ryan slipping, they might be interested in making a call to the New York Jets in order to nab the top quarterback prospect; and, of course, the Patriots really do not want to select seventh overall.
But desires don't always lead to action. The word is the Dolphins wanted to exchange the top pick for a bushel of selections, but the cost of the contract for the player picked first overall was a detriment for potential trade parters.
I expect New England to do just about anything to get out of the seventh pick overall. If they are able to drop down in the first round, where they land could be a clue to who they are interested in. If they remain in the top 10, they may have their sights on LB Keith Rivers or CB Leodis McKelvin for less than seventh overall money. If it's between eleven through 20, I can see LB Jerod Mayo, whose stock is climbing, as a possibility. The last grouping between 21-31 would be oneof three players: LB Quentin Groves, LB Curtis Lofton, or CB Brandon Flowers.
A lot can happen between now and Saturday. I get the feeling there will be more trade activity than last year.
And a quick correction. I got two picks right: New England won't make a selection with the 31st overall pick. What amazing foresight, right?
