There's a lot of talk going on, starting with the Miami Dolphins talking contract with Jake Long and Vernon Gholston. And the talk that died down between Dallas and Tennessee has sparked back up.
Sometimes not talking is the mistake, which is what Michigan receiver Mario Manningham did when he didn't honestly admit he used pot before. That likely will hurt his character and it will cost him millions as his draft stock takes a hit.
Even honesty doesn't pay. Auburn linebacker/defensive end Quentin Groves informed all teams that he had minor heart surgery. Is it even possible to have minor heart surgery? Even with a doctor's note, many teams will take it very seriously and will pass on Groves in the first round. They won't take that kind of risk with a first round pick. San Francisco says they have no problem with Groves' recent procedure, but actions will speak louder than words.
With all that in mind, here's the second edition mock draft:
1. Miami Dolphins – OT Jake Long, Michigan
Doesn’t matter which Long, it would be a great pick for the Dolphins
2. St. Louis Rams – DE Chris Long, Virginia
He will be a great tandem with last year’s top pick, Adam Carriker
3. Atlanta Falcons – DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU
Don’t like Matt Ryan this early. Will draft a QB later
4. Oakland Raiders – DE Vernon Gholston, Ohio State
Sacks look cooler than stopping the run
5. Kansas City Chiefs – OT Ryan Clady, Boise State
KC cut three O-linemen from a unit that gave up 55 sacks.
6. New York Jets – RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas
Incumbent RB Thomas Jones hits the magical age of 30 in August. Time to get his replacement
7. New England Patriots – LB Keith Rivers, USC
He can play inside or outside and the Patriots love versatile players
8. Baltimore Ravens – QB Matt Ryan, Boston College
If QB Troy Smith is the franchise’s future, he’s gonna have to earn it
9. Cincinnati Bengals – DT Sedrick Ellis, USC
If the Bengals do convert to a 3-4, Ellis should be able to handle playing DE
10. New Orleans Saints – CB Leodis McKelvin, Troy State
The secondary really needs reinforcements
11. Buffalo Bills – WR Devin Thomas, Michigan State
The Bills love one-year wonders. Remember QB Rob Johnson?
12. Denver Broncos – OT Chris Williams, Vanderbilt
The retirement of Matt Lepsis means Denver needs an eventual starter for the O-line
13. Carolina Panthers – DE Calais Campbell, Miami
It’s a problem when you have DE Julius Peppers and only 23 sacks
14. Chicago Bears – RB Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois
They made a mistake with RB Cedric Benson. Hopefully this would fix the error
15. Detroit Lions – OT Jeff Otah, Pittsburgh
QB Jon Kitna guaranteed 10 wins. That won’t happen unless he’s kept upright
16. Arizona Cardinals – CB Mike Jenkins, South Florida
’Zona can move Antrell Rolle to safety and strengthen the corner with this pick
17. Minnesota Vikings – DE Derrick Harvey, Florida
The search for a effective pass rusher continues
18. Houston Texans – DE Lawrence Jackson, USC
Could be the final piece of a young and hungry defensive line
19. Philadelphia Eagles – OG Branden Alberts, Virginia
Wherever the O-line leaks, Alberts can fill the need with his versatility
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, Tennessee State
So much for losing CB Brian Kelly as a free agent
21. Washington Redskins – DE Phillip Merling, Clemson
They need to create more pressure to help DE Andre Carter
22. Dallas Cowboys – RB Felix Jones, Arkansas
Since Dallas wouldn’t trade up for McFadden, they wait for his teammate
23. Pittsburgh Steelers – S Kenny Phillips, Miami
This would guarantee no one would hear a peep from Anthony Smith
24. Tennessee Titans – G John Greco, Toledo
It’s impossible to replace two guards with one free agent signing
25. Seattle Seahawks – DT Pat Sims, Auburn
The run defense has room for improvement, especially with two less DTs
26. Jacksonville Jaguars – RB Jonathan Stewart, Oregon
The Jags get an early jump to find Fred Taylor’s successor
27. San Diego Chargers –CB Aquib Talib, Kansas
The combined wingspan on this secondary would cover the field
28. Dallas Cowboys – WR Malcom Kelly, Oklahoma
Terry Glenn has declined and Terrell Owens might not be far behind
29. San Francisco 49ers – OT King Dunlap, Auburn
The line needs to be fortified after allowing 55 sacks
30. Green Bay Packers – CB Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech
Both Charles Woodson and Al Harris are getting up in age
31. New York Giants – LB Jerod Mayo, Tennessee
New York lost two ‘backers in free agency
