Greetings Pats fans, I've been a bit of a slacker lately on the blog because well, frankly, there hasn't been a whole heck of a lot of NFL news to report on my beloved Patriots and to be honest, in March that's kind of how it should be. But April is here! The draft is just a few weeks away and thank Belichick for that because I was starting to get draft fatigue and we were still over a month away.

So what've we missed since I've been gone? A couple rookie visits (Darren McFadden is nothing but a smokescreen of faux interest to make those salivating over him think it's at least possible that the Pats would take him), the scintillating owners meetings where they're discussing topics ranging from mildly interesting (headsets in defensive players helmets) to snoozeriffic (elimination of the push out rule) and the occasional Arlen Specter Spygate outrage/book tour. The whole no-hair-hanging-over-the-nameplate discussion isn't really worth an entire blog but I'll weigh in with some brief thoughts since I played for a college coach who had a rule that you had to be clean shaven and hair no longer than your collar. He was a really fun-loving guy. I understand what they're going for but if Troy Polamalu doesn't mind getting ripped down by his coif who are the owners to tell him he's got to get a trim? There's a lack of personality in many of the NFL players these days (aside from those way-out-of-date thorn around the upper arm tattoos), if they want to grow long hair I say let them.

As many of you might be aware I find NFL mock drafts to be somewhat of a waste of time (scroll down for earlier post) but I can't claim to even be a respectable football blogger without posting a mock of my own. So, without further ado, here's how I see the NFL Draft going down in t-minus 25 days...

1. Miami Dolphins: Edyta Sliwinska

 I am Hot

One of the most underrated additions to the Patriots last season was QB GF Gisele Bundchen. You’d be surprised how much adding an insanely hot female can do for a team. Jason Taylor’s partner on DWTS fits the bill. Instantly she adds an element of hotness that has not been seen in Miami since Larry Csonka.

T-minus 19 days until the draft. Couple Patriots links of interest:

  • Quentin Groves, my current boo of all OLB prospects, apparently has a thing for the Steelers.
  • Shalise Manza Young of the Providence Journal has a good recap of the Pats off-season activity so far. Looks like Rosevelt Colvin's injury might've been a ruptured achilles, hence the lack of interest in him.
  • Peter King mentions the Pats in discussion of how an uncapped season in the NFL might work.
  • The Bleacher Report has the Top Ten Reasons to Love the Patriots. As if I even needed to post this...
  • The Pats are suing a former season ticket holder. This is a Herald story and I'm only linking to it because it's not by Judas Tomase.

Mike Florio's Pro Football Talk Rumor Mill is a site any NFL fan should check out multiple times daily. Now he's got the Patriots draft needs up. There's some interesting stuff in here as to who the Pats are rumored to be interested in. I take issue with Safety being a major need. Maybe for depth but OLB and CB are bigger ones. He also fails to mention Sammy Morris who was tearing it up last year before he got hurt against Dallas. The Pats should be pretty much set at running back. Tight End, specifically a blocking behemoth, needs to be much higher on the list with Kyle Brady not coming back.

Our personal take for the biggest needs on the Pats are:

  1. Outside Linebacker - It's still unclear if Pierre Woods has a future as a starter or if he's going to be stuck on Special Teams. Regardless they need an OLB, preferably with their first pick be it at #7 or wherever they trade down to. Get to know the linebackers with Pats potential here.

The Pats lack of depth at Linebacker just got a little better as they signed former New York Jets ILB Victor Hobson per PFT via NFL Networks Adam Schefter. It's a solid signing and one that was badly needed. He's got experience in the Pats 3-4 defense and he very well could be starting if Junior Seau doesn't return. A starting 4 of Adalius Thomas, Hobson, Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel doesn't look to shabby with some draft picks yet to be (hopefully) added. Welcome aboard Victor, your transgressions against us when you were a Jet are all forgotten.

 Now he's a good guy

Here's a quick video on Chad Jackson. Chad played high school football for the Hoover Bucs, a high school team made quasi-famous in the MTV reality show Two-A-Days. Chad's looking pretty ripped these days. With a certain Boston Herald writer reporting that the Patriots will try to limit Randy Moss' snaps this season (rather than having him play nearly every offensive play as he did in 2007) Chad might get even more of a chance to get on the field. After watching this video it's hard not to like him and want him to have some success this year.

  • Adam Shefter sums up some of the Patriots recent visits.
  • Mike Reiss has the Pats meeting with man-beast Vernon Gholston (who will most likely be long gone by #7 overall)
  • Reiss also has a follow-up on Victor Hobson. Looks like yet another quality veteran signing for the Pats at a bargain basement cost.
  • The Bleacher Report has a pretty good off-season sum up article. I'm a little higher on the signing of Fernando Bryant than they are but overall they concur with the Pats preference for experience over flash anad name recognition.
  • Troy Brown is till pondering his future. Personally I'd prefer he retire so I don't have to watch him play for another team. Regardless he'll be in the Pats soon-to-be-unveiled Hall of Fame if not the NFL Hall of Fame.

There's been a new trend over the past couple weeks with the latest NFL mock craps having the Patriots taking an offensive lineman with the #7 overall pick. Early on there was the occasional mention of Boise State's Ryan Clady being a potential target but the newest name to enter the fray is Virginia Guard/Tackle Branden Albert. Even the mention of the Pats not taking a defensive playmaker is enough to send Pats fans into a tizzy but as we all know nothing is out of the question. No one predicted the Patriots taking Logan Mankins in the first round a couple years ago. A shock at the time. A genius move when we look back at it.

So could the Pats take someone like Albert or Clady at #7 overall? Let's not forget that the entire left side of the offensive line went to the Pro Bowl last year including center Dan Koppen. That leaves us with Right Guard Stephen Neal and Right Tackles by commitee Nick Kaczur and Ryan O'Callaghan. Though Neal was injured in the Super Bowl the Sporting News reports that he will be ready to go for 2008. There's no doubt that the Patriots offensive line was abused in the Super Bowl but that doesn't mean we can just discount the fact that Tom Brady was well protected for the 18 wins before that. Still, if Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli believe that Clady or Albert would improve their offensive line they will absolutely consider them.

Happy Thursday all. We're about to cross the T-Minus 2 Week mark until the NFL Draft and personally I'm ready for it to just be here. Here's some linkage from around the internets:

Mike Reiss has a piece about the impact of the Jets signing Kerry Rhodes to a long term extension could have on the draft. It could make the Jets more likely to trade down which could be good or bad for the Patriots depending on who would jump ahead of them. A team that wants Matt Ryan = good, a team that wants Vernon Gholston = bad.

Scouts Inc. reranks the 2005 draft class with the Patriots now receiving a B+. Most notable is Nick Kaczur (who many are calling for to be replaced by a high draft pick this year) moving up from a 3rd round pick to a 1st round grade. From the 2005 draft class the Pats got four starters: Logan Mankins, Kaczur, Ellis Hobbs and James Sanders, I'd have to call that an A draft.

Anyone who's ever played a game of Madden NFL knows that there are all sorts of defenses that football teams run these days. It's slightly different and a bit more complicated than the days of backyard football when the only defensive rule was having to count to five mississippi before you could rush the quarterback. While I am by no means an expert in NFL defenses knowing the difference between the 4-3 defense and the 3-4 defense (which the Patriots run) can prove to be helpful around draft time as many of the players are better fits for one system or the other.

Feel Seymours Ubiquity

This article from Pro Football Weekly breaks down the all-time greats of the 3-4 defense. It's interesting that Ron Borges wrote the article, he used to work for the Boston Globe where he blasted Bill Belichick for what he thought was wasting a pick on Richard Seymour. In the article linked above Seymour received votes for being the best ever Defensive End in the 3-4. Here's what Borges had to say about him way back when:

Auburn's Quentin Groves reportedly had heart surgery on March 27th, but he's supposedly okay and the problem has been fixed. That could very well be the case but "heart surgery" and "multi-million dollar investment" aren't two things that go very well together. I'd still love to see Groves on the Pats, but I'm a little unsure about using the #7 overall pick on him...

Bleacher Buzz makes a good point in regards to this weeks South Park Pats-hatefest episode. Let's not forget that the Broncos "cheated" as well and were fined/docked a draft pick.

The Dallas News Cowboys Blog reports another rumor that the Pats are interested in Pacman Jones. I highly, highly doubt this. Some may think the Pats are willing to take chances on guys like Randy Moss and Corey Dillon but Pacman is in a different stratosphere.

Happy Monday y'all. The draft is fast approaching and after much research and deliberation we're about to commit to who we think will be the Patriots selection at #7 overall. Look for that later in the week, I think many will be surprised by our pick but we plan on defending it vigorously. Until then here are this mornings links:

Victor Hobson's going to be wearing #59 for the Patriots. Sorry to all those folks who were holding out hope for a return of Rosey Colvin.

Mike Reiss has a list of notable upcoming dates for the Pats, the soonest of which is a Belchick Press Conference about the draft this Wednesday.

Reiss also has a nice piece about Todd Mc-Shouldn't-Be-Doing-Mock-Drafts. Didn't realize he's a Boston guy so I guess we'll have to give him a little bit more of a pass in the future. Interesting read about his ascension to challenge Mel Kiper Jr. as ESPN's top draftnik.

It's a slow news morning, probably due to the anticipation of the schedule being released in mere minutes. Check back in later for a full analysis of the Pats schedule as well as their NFL rivals. Until then here's Patriots.com draft fact sheet.

Although I'm as excited about the draft as any NFL Superfan once the big day gets here you immediately realize how tedious the whole thing is. So to help out my fellow Pats fans who don't have two full days to sit in front of the TV here are the approximate times the Pats will be picking. Before you thank me please realize that these times are ROUGH at best. Some teams don't take the fully alloted time. Trades happen. Just use it as a general guideline. I will update the times as things move along.

Approximate Patriots Pick Times (EST):

First reaction: WOW. We knew the Pats had a relatively easy list of opponents in 2008 and it looks like NFL has gone out of its way to ensure the Pats front office is happy with how they handled 4 west coast trips in one season. By dividing the west coast games into two trips of back-to-backers the Pats travel has been cut in half. They will undoubtedly remain on the west coast in between those games and avoid major jet lag. Here's our game by game analysis:

Week 1: Kansas City Chiefs - Lambs to the slaughter here, I'd bet this will serve as a reminder to the league that the entire starting record-setting offense from 2007 returns. Brodie Croyle is probably still cleaning out his shorts after learning he has to open up at the Patriots.

Week 2: @ New York Jets- Like last years opener this will be a solid test for the Pats as the Jets have added some solid Free Agents and hold the #6 pick in the draft. I like playing at the Meadowlands early in the season, it's a chance to put an early stranglehold on the AFC East title. Let's just hope we can avoid all the off-the-field drama that last years contest had.

Birthday boy Bill Belichick spoke to the press this morning regarding the draft. As expected he played it pretty close to the vest. You can read Mike Reiss recap here or for those of you who have the time and the lack of an employer who monitors your internet usage here's the video of it.

After watching various draft specials yesterday I'm kind of sick of all the outrage at how easy the Patriots schedule is for 2008. First, their opponents for this season were determined back in 2001 and second, it's not their fault the Dolphins suck.

There are some comical predictions going around Pats messageboards like www.patsfans.com about when the next dose of media outrage over the Assistant Golf Pro will happen. I'd say the safe bet would be immediately following the draft next weekend.  Once the draft dust settles it will be time for another round of "Why Hasn't Matt Walsh Spoken to the NFL Yet?". Whoops I mentioned him by name. I pray to Belichick that we hear what he does or does not know by training camp. If this a-hole ruins any part of the 2008 season for me I'm flying to Hawaii to beat him myself.

We'll be posting our complete analysis of who we believe the Patriots are most likely to pick at #7 overall (assuming they don't trade down of course) tomorrow. I'm sure some Pats fans will take issue with who we pick but after a couple months of research we're finally ready to make our decision. Be on the look out for that tomorrow. On to today's linkage...

Mike Reiss has the Patriots signing Punter Scott Player. I don't even care if this guy can even punt anymore, he's got the best look of any NFL player currently in the league. It's hard to understand why Belichick loves old punters so much, there were a couple young guys in camp last year with "live legs" but both were cut. Wouldn't be surprising to see a draft pick used on a punter this year in the late rounds.

While I enjoy reading Mock Drafts from around the internets I would never claim to know the true needs of the 31 NFL teams that actually lost a regular season game in 2007. The Patriots are what I know and in the two months since the perfect season fell to pieces two minutes before its culmination I have immersed myself in all things draft related. I know the Pats roster inside and out. I know when contracts expire. I know who’s poised to break out and who’s getting old. Most of all I know trying to predict what the Patriots will do on draft day is futile. So if this ends up being totally wrong don’t hold it against me.

First, I am operating under the following three assumptions:

1) These players will be off the board:

Chris Long, DE Virginia

Draft week is finally here! This of course will make the week drag by slower than ever but at least the end is in sight. The real job has been quite slammed this morning so the links are a little late but it seems like there's somewhat of a news blackout surrounding the NFL as everyone prepares for the big weekend. We'll plan on having some fun stuff and links up later in the week to maximize everyone's draft viewing experience. We're also hoping to be live blogging through most of the first round, more to come on that as the week progresses. Until then, the linkage:

The Providence Journal has a look at BB and SP's favorite players to draft: Lineman and Tight Ends. Surely there will be at least a couple more of those this year. Potentially including the 7th overall pick.

The New York Daily News takes a look at how the Patriots/Jets rivalry has played out over the years on draft day. This weekend will be no different as the Jets pick just before the Pats.

If you're like me you're just about done with all this pre-draft hype. I am ready for the stupid thing to be here already. I can't even watch ESPN's ON THE CLOCK which isn't really about the draft but just another excuse for a super long Sportscenter with some football commentary woven in. The totally set-up Mel Kiper Jr. vs. Todd McShay debates make me hit the fast forward button every time. Nothing better than two "experts" getting faux fired up at each-others predictions when odds are both of them are totally wrong. Great television.

Apologies for the power outage in blog paradise this morning. Not sure if it's due to A) our recent explosion in popularity or B) (and more likely) the crappy server this blog runs on. Anyway we're pondering a move to a more reliable site in the future if this keeps up. Please bare with us until then. Now on to today's linkage.

Wow a crapload of Patriots news this morning and none of it is even draft related. After today I'll allow myself to really start to get excited for the draft to finally be here. It's looking more and more like the Pats could have an outside shot at Vernon Gholston though it would not surprise me one bit if he was there and they passed on him. I think the rumors of the Jets trading up to nab Darren McFadden are bologna (or baloney, whichever you prefer), and I can really see them wanting Gholston bad. As always, we'll see. On to today's King Sized Linkage...

The Patriots added TE Marcus Pollard and DL Kenny Smith yesterday. Smith was with the team in training camp last year and has likely been brought back again for training camp depth. Pollard spent all of his career with the Colts until last years disappointing season with the Seahawks. If he's healthy this is a good addition for the Pats since they were skinnier than Amy Winehouse's legs for TE depth.

This is was too good not to post....

"The New England Patriots are pleased to learn that Matt Walsh is finally willing to come forward to meet with the NFL. We are eagerly anticipating his honest disclosures to Commissioner Goodell next month and the return of all the materials he took during his time of employment. We fully expect this meeting to conclude the league’s investigation into a damaging and false allegation that was originally levied against the team on the day before this year’s Super Bowl.

It is important to note that there has never been a confidentiality agreement restricting Matt Walsh and no legal protections were ever necessary for him to speak to the NFL, to media outlets or to anyone else regarding his employment with the Patriots. He demanded to be released from responsibility for his statements, and after a frustrating and lengthy negotiation period, a settlement has finally been reached. Walsh has been granted a significant number of privileges through this agreement, none of which the Patriots or the NFL were obligated to give.

Over the past couple days there's been a new name added to the list of potential Pats at #7 overall and that name is Jerod Mayo. Here's what Don Banks had to say today:

“A guy that I have in the top 10, and it’s not terribly widespread, is Jerod Mayo, the inside linebacker from Tennessee. I have him going to New England at 10 because I have the Saints coming up from 10 to 7 on my board to get Sedrick Ellis. Everybody knows the Patriots wouldn’t mind getting out of the seventh spot if certain players are gone. I’ve been told they like Mayo more than Rivers, which is one reason Rivers has fallen a bit on my board. “My thinking is New England believes Mayo is really experienced at the inside linebacker position. He’s played in the middle and they think he’ll make a good inside linebacker. That will allow them to move Adalius Thomas back outside where his playmaking ability seems to be higher.”

It's been a long two and three-quarters month since the Pats pursuit of perfection crashed in flames and this last week has gone by slower than March did but the end of the week is finally here and the 2008 NFL Draft is upon us. We'll be doing some blogging throughout the weekend with some guest bloggers. I'm not going to call it a "live blog" because there will be alcohol involved (which could be an advantage I guess) but there will consistent updates throughout the day especially for all things Patriots.

I find the draft to be one of the most anti-climactic events in sports. There's nearly three months of analysis before draft day gets here. Millions of scenarios are played out. In the end it never really plays out as exciting as you would hope. When your team finally selects their player you have five minutes of excitement, you imagine that player and how awesome he could potentially be, what number he might wear. Then, slowly the excitement fades and you realize it will be another 3 hours before your team selects another player, and it will probably be someone you've never heard of unless your name is Mel Kiper Jr. or Mel Kiper III. Anyway, with the Pats selecting in the top ten this will be about as interesting as things can get since they consistently pick in the 20s so I will make sure to enjoy it. Onto some linkage:

As I pointed out earlier there's been a lot of rumors floating that the Pats are targeting Jerod Mayo. Though I am not a big fan of the Patriots Fan Weekly blog (since it only gets updated around major NFL events and usually features the writers doing things like taking stealth photos of a nimrod like Kellie Pickler - stuff that Pats fans are really really interested in) Tom Casale makes a good point:

The only information being leaked right now is information the Pats want leaked therefore this could very well be a smoke screen. I tend to agree with Casale. All of this is making me think more and more that the Patriots will select someone not even obsessed blogging-types like myself could've predicted. We'll see.

Just had to post this Mock Crap from the LA Times in which Sam Farmer has the Patriots and Jets SWAPPING THEIR FIRST ROUND PICKS. Why in a million year would the Pats or the Jets ever do this? I can imagine that phone call:

"Hey Tannenbaum, it's Scott Pioli. I know we basically hate eachother and our franchises are bitter rivals, especially after the whole Spygate thing you rat bastard, but we really want Vernon Gholston and we don't want you to have him so what do you say we throw in some lower round picks and you let us move up and take him? McKelvin will still be there, I swear to G."

"Oh hey Scott, yeah you know I will probably lose my job if we don't do something to close the gap between our franchises you cheating bastard and allowing you to get a player you really want who would be just as good a fit in our defense as yours will probably haunt me for as long as I'm here but what the hay, that sounds like a great deal that's just crazy enough to work!"

The big day is finally here! So far this morning the internets have been a flurry of activity. We'll be checking in throughout the day. But as I said yesterday there will be alcohol involved so no promises as to how much posting will be done or how many typos there will be. Pat Kirwan, someone I trust more than anyone else when it comes to NFl info, has the Pats trading up to #5 to get Vernon Gholston is his last mock draft. Gholston has been slipping down a lot of boards and some are now labelling him a "workout warrior" so we'll see if the Pats like him that much that they want to move up to get him. Personally I don't think they will. There's too many good players to be had in the middle of round one thru the end of round two. That's where the Pats want to be. Alright, off to finish off the prep for today's cooking. The menu:

Alright the food is all ready to go, the new silver Randy Moss jersey and lucky hat from the past season have been donned and we are ready for the 2008 draft to get started. Somewhat surprising that there hasn't been any more action on the trade front this morning. With an extra three hours this year before the draft starts you'd think teams might use the time to get crackalackin on some moves. Still an hour and half left, maybe it's still early. Alcohol consumption beginning shortly, the impact of which on the blogging remains to be seen...

Oh yes ladies and gentleman, Mike Dussault does have a better half.  This is Lane Dussault, Mike Dussault’s wife and today Mike has offered me the opportunity to kick of the NFL season with a blog of my own.  At first, it seemed ridiculous, but if by some chance you are a dude trying to get his significant other interested in the NFL season this fall then listen up…It is true that if, by some chance, you do get your current gal interested in the NFL don’t expect the beer belching, stat loving, strategy watching buddy that you often sit on the couch with.  However, you will get a chick who will catch a few important facts and ask a few questions that make you look at her with new eyes.  Plus, she will look a heck of a lot better than most of the Patriot fan base.  You have now found yourself a “Patriot Playmate” if you will (who knows maybe one day I will shoot the calendar).  So back to my original question, “How do you get your honey interested in your favorite hobby?”  Well, let’s start with draft day, which just so happens to be today.  Honestly, if you can get your chick interested in this you are golden come August.  So my husband likes to make this day an event in our household and he starts by cooking a massive meal for me and his friends.  That is tip number one….cook for your mate and that will pull her in real quick. So while the food is bubbling and her stomach is growling she can sit on the couch waiting for the Patriot’s seventh round pick.  But, there is a lot to watch beforehand.  For example, peek her interest with the Chris Long story.  A son who is following in his dad’s footsteps grabs a girl’s heart strings everytime,.  Plus she’s seen the commercials she can recognize Howie Long in an instant.  Or give her a list of the top picks, and why certain teams might be interested in them.  Relay the Brady Quinn story from last year.  This top quarterback wasn’t picked early on and it sent the media into a frenzy.  Although it wasn’t on the cover of Us Weekly, the “shock and ahhh “ of it all was no different.  If she IS a gossip queen, get her to hate the Jets immature and obnoxious “boos”.  If she is PMSing it gets some aggression out, that won’t be taken out on you. “What losers!” So my point is, play to her interests.  There is no reason why you can’t spend draft day and the rest of the season together on the couch, along with your buddies enjoying the best of both worlds.  I too have become a fan.  Granted I may not watch for the same reasons my husband watches, but I do have a genuine love for the Patriots and the game itself…and I have a slew of friends who never thought that would happen.

As the Pats pick was rolling around i was hoping for a trade down and we got it. They could trade down again and I would not be surprised. More blogging to come. Internet isn't as solid as I thought.

Well the rumors were true. I thought the mention of Mayo as the Pats guy was a smoke screen but clearly Michael Holley of WEEI in Boston knows his stuff. Now that the Pats have taken a young linebacker in the first round for the first time since BB's reign began the expectations on young Mayo will be high. Can he immediately contribute? How does he stack up against 4th year Pats ILB Eric Alexander. It will be interesting to see. I bet the majority of  Pats fans are happy with the selection. There were two distinctive camps in Patriot nation. Those who wanted a cornerback and those who wanted a linebacker. Those of us who predicted an O-lineman were assuming the Pats would do something unexpected. In the end they drafted a guy at a position they probably needed most.

Of course someone no one was mentioning Terrence Wheatley but he's the newest Patriot. A quick review of his pluses and minuses shows that his number one strength is versatility. We'll check back in later once we sober up...

Despite a minor hangover I rallied from the bed to the couch this morning at 7am and of course the Pats traded away their first of three third round picks. Luckily it was only a short wait until the picked up an OLB Shawn Crable from Michigan. As soon as I get some chow in me I'll look into him but upon initial analysis I like what the Pats have done so far. I don't understand the fans who are complaining about the players the Patriots have selected so far. What the hell do we the fans know? What ESPN and bs mock craps tell us? I'm still drinking the Bill Belichick Kool Aid and so far the Pats have picked up players at the three positions they needed them the most.

Some other reactions from around the league:

Kansas City is making the most of their plethora of picks. Now the Jared Allen doesn't seem quite so strange. They've picked up a pretty good replacement for him in Dorsey, a versatile G/T Branden Albert (who I had the Pats taking) and a physical corner in Brandon Flowers.

Alright we're back from breakfast and we're feeling much better. The Patriots have made two more picks QB Kevin O'Connell and CB Jonathan Wilhite. I'm sure many citizen of Patriots nation are up in arms over the selection of Kevin O'Connell but personally I like the pick. As Mike Mayock just said on Nfl Network this is a great pick and an example of the Patriots thinking ahead of the curve. O'Connell is a raw prospect and with a couple years behind Tom Brady he could be ready to step in or be traded for a high value pick. Everything I'm reading about O'Connell makes him sound really intriguing.

If anyone was wondering what the Patriots like in the cornerbacks Wilhite prety much sums it up. Both he and Terrence Wheatley are 5' 9" and really quick just like Ellis Hobbs. Clearly in the Patriots defense a lack of height is not a detriment. Sure there are fans crying about how short they are but if they're big enough for Belichick and Pioli they're big enough for me.

Though the Pats 5th round selection Matt Slater from UCLA is listed as a Wide Receiver he's really a jack of all trades. Here's an interesting article that might actually get Pats fans excited about him:

http://www.pe.com/sports/college/ucla/stories/PE_Sports_L

"He kind of reminds me of Devin Hester, the way he hits it," said running back/kick returner Kahlil Bell. "A lot of returners, myself included, they will dance around and try to juke 11 guys.

"Slater sees a crease, and with his speed he just hits it."

And just like Slater hits a crease, he delivers his share of hits on special teams, as well. Against BYU, he forced a fumble on a kickoff, and over the past two seasons he has earned a reputation as a big hitter as a gunner on punt and kickoff coverage.

Well it was a fun weekend and upon further review I am excited for the players that the Pats picked up. Thanks to all those who joined us here at the house or on the blogga. And now if I may recap...

Mayo was his Name-O

Rumors came out in the days just before the draft that the Pats had ILB Jerod Mayo targeted. I thought it might be another smoke screen but this time it was actually true. Michael Holley of WEEI and Don Banks of SI.com were right. Tom Casale and pals at Patriots Fan Weekly were wrong like me. It's amazing they work in the same building as the Patriots do and still have as little insider info as I do 3000 miles away.

Anyway, I had Mayo as a Pats Potential but thought he'd be more likely in the second round. Apparently as scouts did more study on him (since he declared after his junior year the scouts weren't prepped on him) they all fell more and more in love with his game. This is a positive sign. He isn't shooting up the boards because of his combine performance (Jet-Beast Gholston) it's because of how he plays the game. Now even if Junior Seau doesn't return the Pats are looking a whole better at ILB with Tedy Bruschi, Victor Hobson, Eric Alexander and Mayo. Mayo looks strong and fast and he's just the player Pats fans have been waiting for the organization to draft. Now our hopes and dreams for Tedy Bruschi's heir to the throne are placed squarely on young Jerod Mayo's shoulders.

Ugh, the Monday after the draft. It's going to be a long two plus months before training camp opens with only mini-camp providing any kind of Patriots related excitement. But we've got some new players, the defense has gotten younger and things are looking promising for the upcoming season.

One thing I just have to laugh at is all the talk on Patriots Fan boards and on sites like SI.com is talk that the Patriots "reached" for some of their picks. First off I don't really care what the "draftniks" say. When it comes to evaluating talent I'll take Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli's opinion over Mel Kiper, Mark Schelereth, and of course Matt Millen any time. And what do these complaining fans know about evaluating football talent and projecting it into a pro scheme? The Patriots gave Pats fans everything they've been asking for this year - linebackers and cornerbacks. I love the selection of a quarterback. Why not? Brady isn't playing forever and as we saw with Drew Bledsoe it never hurts to have a good backup. All the complaining is just ridiculous and goes to show some people only follow pro sports so they can piss and moan about whatever the team does outside of winning games. I hate to say it but Boston might be the capital of that.

Mike Dragosavich - Punter, North Dakota State : Top ranked punter by many in this years draft.

Casey Tyler - Defensive Tackle, Portland State: Played Defensive End in a 3-4 scheme in college.

Jonathan Stupar - Tight End, Virginia: Nothing too impressive about him stats/bio-wise but he played for BB bud Al Groh.

The Pats are continuing to add rookie free agents to round out the roster as this weeks rook mini-camp approaches. As Belichick says this is a learning camp and there won't be much to take away from it other than how the beat reporters think the rookies look. This of course includes morons like Michael Felger of the Boston Herald who jump to all sorts of conclusions based on watching a non-contact practice, like in 2006 when he proclaimed Laurence Maroney would be the "starter" over Corey Dillon and ignited Dillon's ire for the rest of season. Call me a geek but I also look forward to seeing which numbers the rookies choose. I bet Mayo wears #57. Anyway, on to today's linkage...

Heir Reiss has a plethora of good stuff today -  he checks in the Pats owner Robert Kraft who's excited about this years draft as I would hope he would be since he's got to write out millions of dollars worth of checks to these guys. He also has a great piece on Terrence Wheatley who I think will step in and contribute this year. One of the most interesting parts of the article was Scott Pioli touching on why the Pats prefer smaller corners:

The draft was three days ago and already SI.com has a mock draft up for next year. The only reason I am posting it is so we can take note of who the best players in College Football will be next year. I really only watch the NFL but when I catch the occasional Saturday college game it's nice to maybe know a couple players to watch. Also worth noting the Pats are naturally picking 32nd after apparently beating the Cowboys in Super Bowl 43.

Here's Todd McShay's 2009 Mock Draft as well. Again, New England picking 32nd, Cowboys 31st.

The Patriots cut some dead weight today to make room for the rookie haul of the past few days. Losing TJ Slaughter also opens up jersey #51, I was mistaken earlier when I mentioned #57 for Mayo as I stupidly forgot it had been retired for Steve Nelson. Worth mentioning as well that Andre Tippet's #56 isn't getting assigned to anyone any time soon, especially in the year he's inducted into the Hall of Fame.

How's your Post-Draft Depression going? Mine isn't too good. Rookie Mini-Camp is like the methadone for draft addicts, only it doesn't really work that well. I'll admit I get fairly excited to see A) who gets what numbers, B) what kind of facemask each of them choose to start their pro careers with, and C) who Mike Felger will decide to piss off this year. Part of me almost thinks the Second Void (between draft and training camp) is worse than the First Void (End of Season to Draft) since there's so much information to research and ponder with the draft. Now that the Pats team is pretty much set there's nothing to analyze except which games I'll try to attend. Oh well, at least it's already May... almost...

One thing I've noticed in the past couple weeks is I think Belichick might be trying to make over his image somewhat. From the self-aware BB who opened his post-draft press conference commenting this was a very un-BB like draft without any lineman or tight ends to the BB who did an hour long sit down with reporters to discuss all things Spygate something seems different about the Hoodied One. I for one am enjoying it. Love him or hate him I think most would agree he's a football genius and getting some extra insight into that genius is pretty cool to me. These comments from his WEEI radio appearance stood out to me:
