As a Patriots fan I look at the present day NFL football Jets like an annoying younger brother who tries all kind of tricks and schemes but ultimately, if it comes down to crunch time andf I really have to kick his ass, like in a playoff game, he really doesn't stand a chance. Why? Chad Pennington is not the quarterback who's going to beat Brady. Kellen Clements got some time this year and showed he's probably not the guy either.
So why does everyone think they're going to take Arkansas Running Back Darren McFadden or Ohio State Man-Beast Vernon Gholston?
Matt Ryan would instantly upon arrival be at least tied with Chad Pennington for the starting QB position.
They've already made strong moves to shore up their biggest weaknesses. The offensive line has been stabilized, if for only two seasons, but clearly whoever is behind center will be protected. There were also be some running lanes for Thomas Jones that weren't there in 2007.
The Jets might've overpaid for OLB Calvin Pace but I sure would've loved to have seen the Pats sign him. It's just another pass rusher that the questionable right side of New England's line is going to have to deal with.
So now most mock craps have the Jets picking up McFadden or Gholston. With McFadden they get a modest improvement over Thomas Jones, someone who, in the absolute best case scenario could be the next Adrian Peterson. As amazing as AP was last year the Vikings still didn't make the playoffs.
With Gholston they get a potentially behemoth pass rusher. Those are valuable when you play against Tom Brady. They've already put a lot of money into Pace. Why not invest this next huge batch in the best quarterback in the draft?
Matt Ryan has to definitely be considered as a factor at the #6 for the Jets. They might ultimately think that he's not worth that spot but if he tears it up at his Pro Day... why not?
